Externship: As a participant in the Navy Senior Medical Student Program, you are eligible to perform required clinical training of school approved electives taken in lieu of a vacation during the senior at a naval or civilian hospital. This training may be taken at any time during the senior year, and must be required or approved by the school as part of the senior year. This training is not required for participation in the Senior Medical Student Program, but is offered for the convenience of those students desiring additonal training. You are NOT entitled to travel pay and allowances in connection with this training as your orders will be permissive in nature. Application: Applications are available from the Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Navy Department, Washington, D.C. 20390, ATTN: Code 36, for those already holding Ensing 1915 commissions. Those desiring to participate in the Navy Senior Medical Student Program who do not already hold commissions in the Navy Ensign 1915 Program will be required to make application for a commission in the Navy Ensign 1915, U. S. Naval Reserve at the nearest Naval Recruiting Station. 13. Processing Time: An average of four months is usually required to process each application. The absolute deadline that completed applications must reach the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and the Bureau of Naval Personnel is 1 February. This is necessary so that sufficient time is given the boards to pass on the overall qualifications of each applicant. Those selected are required to meet the moral, mental and physical standards of Navy acceptance. All applicants will be notified by individual letter of their acceptance or rejection not later than the first week in May.
