MORTALITY STATISTICS: 1927

INTRODUCTION

This is the twenty-eighth annual report of mortality statistics prepared by the Bureau of the Census; it relates to the calendar year 1927, and is presented in two parts. Part I includes rate and general tables for the death registration area in continental United States, and special tables for Hawaii and the Virgin Islands; Part II presents an analysis of these statistics in text and text tables.

The data are procured from transcripts of death certificates received from the registration area, which included the Territory of Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, and, in continental United States, 42 States, the District of Columbia, and 21 cities in nonregistration States. The States are:

The total number of deaths returned from this part of continental United States, which included an estimated population of 108,327,000, or 91.3 per cent of the total, was 1,236,949, corresponding to a death rate of 11.4 per 1,000 population-the lowest rate recorded in the annual reports, beginning in 1900.

This report was prepared under the direction of Dr. William H. Davis, chief statistician for vital statistics, assisted by John B. Mitchell, supervising special agent, and Clyde D. Williams, expert chief of division. Acknowledgment is made of the efficient service rendered by John O. Spain and Maud E. Linder.
