FOOD SUPPLY OF THE UNITED STATES

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 1943

UNITED STATES SENATE,

SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE COMMITTEE ON

AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY,
Washington, D. C.

The subcommittee met at 10 a. m., pursuant to call, in the committee room of the Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, 324 Senate Office Building, Senator Ellison D. Smith (chairman) presiding. There were present before the subcommittee:

J. B. Hutson, President, Commodity Credit Corporation.

William McArthur, Director, Grain Division, Commodity Credit Corporation.

John K. Westberg, Price Executive, Office of Price Administration. J. K. Galbraith, Deputy Administrator, Office of Price Adminis

tration.

The CHAIRMAN. The committee will come to order. We have met this morning to discuss the question of corn prices. Senator Gillette, do you know anythink about the question of the ceiling that has been placed on corn?

Senator GILLETTE. I know very little about the ceiling. My only relation with corn is that I produce some of it. I don't have any to sell, but I am very much interested in the question.

The CHAIRMAN. Mr. Hutson, you may give a statement as to the present situation of corn, if you will.

STATEMENT OF J. B. HUTSON, PRESIDENT, COMMODITY CREDIT

CORPORATION

Mr. HUTSON. Mr. Chairman, I have two points that I would like to bring before the committee in addition to the corn ceiling, the details of which I am not familiar with, except in a general way.

I would like to mention the sale of feed wheat, which is one of the matters, I understand, that is before, or will be before, the Senate shortly. Ceilings have been established on corn, and I have overnight weighted out the averages for the country. I find that, as parity is determined in the Department of Agriculture, the ceiling prices are slightly below parity.

Senator AIKEN. How much below?

Mr. HUTSON. In the States of Iowa and Illinois it averages about 5 cents below. In the States of Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Indiana, in a large part of those States, prices are below parity. Senator BUSHFIELD. How much?
