Two volumes of excessive rarity, both bearing on the title the curious wood-
cut device of a Y, with the figure of a man toppling off the broad arm, and a
standing figure pointing to the crown which rests above the narrow arm of the
letter. The motto is "Estrecho el camino de la vida y es ancho el de la per-
dicion." The place and printer's name are considered to be pseudonymous, and
to indicate the press of Jean Crespin at Geneva (the man who printed the
original edition of Foxe's Martyrs in 1557).

Small folio, gothic letter; fine and very large copy in red morocco extra, gilt edges, from the Salvá library Sevilla, 1482 50 00 FIRST EDITION, EXCESSIVELY RARE. In fact no other copy than this has ever been seen in the book-auctions except Lord Stuart de Rothesay's, which was sold in 1855 and fetched £47. The present example is a very fine one, and so large that Salvá suspected it to be a real Large Paper. It consists of 183 leaves (a blank leaf having been cut away either at the beginning or end of sheet +, or the beginning of sheet A). The signatures are 10 leaves, A 7 leaves, B-X eight leaves each, Y six leaves.

This copy fetched £29. 10s at the Seillière sale in London in 1877. Only one other copy (Sobolewski's) is known, and in it the title was wanting, besides two leaves of the table.

The name of Dionys Clemente is unrecorded not only by Ticknor and Antonio, but also by Ximeno in his Dictionary of Valencian writers. From this, the extraordinary rarity of the book may be easily inferred.

Small folio, gothic letter; slightly wormed towards the end, but the copy nevertheless fine and large, from the Salvá library Sevilla, 1514

VERY BARE. The glimpse of the book's history as told in the intitulation on fol. ii is curious, since it reminds us of a parallel instance in English literary history. Urries was in Bruges at the same time as Caxton; and while one was translating the Troy Book from French into English, the other was rendering Valerius Maximus from French into Spanish.

unable to ascertain whether there was a final leaf of colophon or not.

Brunet describes the edition of 1562, and, in his note upon it, says that the first edition of " Valladolid, 1555" is very rare. In the Spanish Ticknor there is a similar but still briefer allusion; but the date is evidently taken from that of the Privilege, which is signed by "Yo la Princesa” at Valladolid in 1555. The privilege was, however, granted to the Zaragoza printer Por quanto vos Miguel de Çapila librero vezino de Caragoça haveys hecho recopilar de latin en romance al Maestro Valles el libro." Consequently the first edition was printed at Zaragoza, not at Valladolid, as described above. Amongst the preliminary pieces there is "El autor al pio Lector," which was not reprinted in the 1562 edition; also six columns of Errata, and a statement that " Quedan se recopilando las guerras que succedierō en Italia. 1409 VALLES (Pedro) Historia del for tissimo, y prudentissimo Capitan Don Hernando de | Aualos Marques de Pescara, con los hechos memorables de otros siete excellentissimos capitanes del Emperador don Carlos. v. No other copy known. It is probably the first or second edition of a

of no edition before that of 1574, which they supposed to be the first, and the
earliest edition known to Gallardo and his continuators was that of 1563.

Excessively rare second edition, slightly altered from the issue of 1605, and
augmented with the Arte de hazer Comedias. These Rimas (in two parts: the
Sonetos and the Rimas varias) were not seen by Brunet, Ticknor, and Gallardo.
The two former mention them on the faith of their reproduction in the Obras

THE FIRST PRINTED COLLECTION of any of Lope de Vega's Comedies. It is un-
mentioned by Salvá, Brunet, and Gallardo; and it came to Ticknor's knowledge only
in time to be referred to in his last English edition. (It was a single copy found in
Germany which he described.) The names of the writers besides Lope are not given
in the book; but No. 6 is the Carlos el Perseguido of Lope (with numerous passages
in the text which were altered in the edition of 1604)-No. 4, "Comedia de la libertad
de Castilla por el Conde Fernan Goncales, en lengua antiga," is not the play of the
same name by Lope, but totally distinct. No. 5, "Hazañas del Cid y su Muerte,
con la tomada de Valencia," is not the second Cid comedy of Guillen de Castro. As
to the Amigos Enojados, and the No. 1 and No. 2, their titles are not to be found
in Salvá's list. According to Ticknor, at least three of the Comedies are by Lope.
The book consists of title and leaves numbered 1-272. On the title is an auto-
graph, "Jes de Jamet a Seville ce 24 d'Avril, 1604."
