A ciência descritiva do século XIX é poética. Para descrever o desconhecido usava-se palavras simples, termos leigos, que hoje em dia foram trocados por termos técnicos. Gordura é chamada de óleo (ver em "fatty degeneration")!
É como se, ao observar e descrever nosso organismo, estivessem visitando outros planetas.
É igualmente interessante a propriedade com que se falava do conhecimento da época e mesmo hipóteses, como se fossem a mais absoluta verdade, se bem que isso se altera de autor para autor.
Como imaginar que, ao estudar as partes do corpo, eles estavam sendo muito mais holísticos de que hoje, em que estudamos genes, secreções, matriz. Um olhar ampliado para os órgãos que ainda hoje insistimos em analisar os detalhes, e esquecemos de olhar como um todo, ingenuamente, e detectar singularidades que o conhecimento tabelado e a biologia molecular nos impede de ver.
