PREFACE

IN grades below the high schools the reading lesson has a twofold purpose : to teach the art of reading and to create and foster a taste for good literature. High schools now very generally have courses in reading and literature; but the great majority of young people never reach the high school, and for them chiefly this book has been prepared.

The more elementary work involved in reading has been mastered, or should have been mastered, before the fifth-reader grades are reached. The pupils are now ready to take a step in the conscious study of good literature when properly presented, and also to give more careful attention to the proper expression of what they read. So far as possible several representative selections, suited to the advancement of the pupil, have been chosen from leading authors. Some definite idea of the author and the character of his writings is thus secured. It is believed that the selections have been judiciously made. They are well suited to the age and maturity of the pupils for whom they are intended.

The selections here used from Longfellow, Whittier, Stowe, Holmes, and Lowell are used by arrangement with and permission of Houghton, Mifflin & Co., the authorized publishers of the writings of these authors. Thanks are also extended to G. P. Putnam's Sons for permission to use selections from Irving ; to Edmund Clarence Stedman for permission to use “ Pan in Wall Street ”; to Charles Scribner's Sons for the use of a selection from Mrs. Dodge; to Lee & Shepard for extracts from Webster, and Julia Ward Howe's “ Battle ilymn of the Republic”; to Littie, Brown & Company for extracts from the 1884 edition of Parkman's works; to Francis Miles Finch for use of poems; to Mrs. Annie Fields for poem by James T. Fields; to D. Appleton & Company for use of Bryant's poems; to Fords, Howard & Hurlbert for selection from Beecher.
