"For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time." I WILLINGLY admit, as a general principle, that controversial addresses from the pulpit should be avoided; but we must not carry this principle too far. Truth and right are to be found in the just medium ; and while we deprecate controversy, needless controversy, we must not fail to oppose erroneous doctrine, nor must we hesitate to set forth the whole truth. He, who spake as never man spake, has in this matter given unto us an example which it is incumbent on His ministers to follow, humbly and distantly indeed, but yet as they may be enabled by the study of the revealed word of God, with prayer, and, as they trust, under the |
