VANCE HARTKE, Washington, D.C., July 22, 1975. Chairman, Committee on Veterans' Affairs, US. Senate, Washington, D.C. DEAR MR. CHAIRMAN: Section 8 of Public Law 93-527, enacted December 21, 1974, directed the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs to carry out an original study of the needs and problems of veterans and their widows 72 years of age or older. The study was to include a profile of current income characteristics, describing the proportion and amount of income from all sources and average necessary for all necessities. The study was also to evaluate the adequacy of the present program to meet the needs of such veterans and widows, as well as actuarial information concerning present expected mortality rates for this group. Given the parameters within which the study was conducted, the study results indicate that the present pension system is generally meeting the purposes and objectives set forth in law in providing assistance to veterans and widows 72 years of age and older. I am enclosing copies of this completed study for your use. Copies of this study have also been sent to the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. Sincerely, ODELL W. VAUGHN, Deputy Administrator Richard L. Roudebush, Administrator). |
