NONDEPARTMENTAL WITNESSES AMERICAN MEAT INSTITUTE STATEMENT OF RICHARD LYNG STATEMENT SUMMARIZED Senator FONG. The subcommittee will come to order. The first witness before us is Mr. Richard Lyng of the American Meat Institute. Mr. Lyng, your statement is before us. It will be incorporated in the record in full. You only have three pages here. You can proceed as you wish. Mr. LYNG. Mr. Chairman, even though my statement is brief, I will summarize it in the interest of time. My name is Richard Lyng. I am president of the American Meat Institute, the national trade association of the meat packing industry. On behalf of the American Meat Institute I am here to make a few brief comments upon the USDA appropriation for fiscal 1976. Last year we testified before this committee and requested that sufficient funds be added to the USDA appropriation to initiate a national swine TB eradication program. We urge, once again, that the following three point program be implemented: 1. USDA should promptly activate disease eradication programs aimed specifically at TB in swine. 2. This disease eradication program must include provision for swine producer indemnification. 3. This disease eradication program must be supported by regulations making swine identification mandatory. The benefits in relation to cost are enormous. For a relatively small amount of money, this can be accomplished, Mr. Chairman. (1791) |
