WE ERE the lovers of German literature, in this country, as numerous as they have hitherto been zealous in supporting our Museum; we then should find it an easy task firmly to continue a manly and honorable struggle against every obstacle that has been thrown in our way by the circumstances of the times. But, since in undertakings such as ours, success is not to be expected from zeal and ability alone; depending in a material degree on the number of their supporters: prudence forbids us, to comply any longer with the wishes of a small, though respectable and chosen, host of friends. and compels us to give way to imperious necessity. We, therefore, quit the field, where we have earned more generous praise than emolument. But, before we take leave of our indulgent readers, we cannot omit gratefully to acknowledge the cheerful and active fupport, with which we have been honoured by all, and the able and liberal lite rary |
