BENEKE, MARTINEZ, FORRISTER, AND
BURTON NOMINATIONS

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1995

U.S. Senate,
Committee On Energy And Natural Resources,

Washington, DC. The committee met, pursuant to notice, at 9:33 a.m., in room SD-366, Dirksen Senate Office Building, Hon. Frank H. Murkowski, chairman, presiding.

OPENING STATEMENT OF HON. FRANK H. MURKOWSKL
U.S. SENATOR FROM ALASKA

The CHAIRMaN. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I call to order the meeting of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

Today the committee will hear from several nominees by our President: Patricia Beneke, who is no stranger to this committee, to be Assistant Secretary for Water and Science at the Department of the Interior, which gets a little attention from this committee; Eluid—is that pretty close?

Mr. Martinez. That is correct, Mr. Chairman.

The Chairman. Martinez to be Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation for the Department of the Interior; Mr. Derrick Forrister, to be Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs in the Department of Energy; Mr. Charles William Burton, to be a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Enrichment Corporation.

It is my understanding that each nominee has submitted all information required by committee.

I want to try and move the hearing along because we have votes beginning at 10 o'clock and I am sure you are anxious to get this matter resolved and your statements in the record.

Does anyone have a family member or members that they would like to introduce and have recognized at this time?

Ms. Beneke.

Ms. Beneke. Yes, Mr. Chairman. I am pleased to have with me here today my parents, Raymond and Marjorie Beneke, sitting in the second row there; my sister, Janet Beneke; my beautiful daughters, Laura Waters and Kate Waters, and I expect my husband will be slipping in the door here momentarily, Bob Waters.

[Laughter.]

Ms. Beneke. I hear traffic was bad this morning.
