A.-Employment and Payrolls TABLE A-1. Estimated total labor force classified by employment status, hours worked, and sex 1 Estimates are based on information obtained from a sample of households and are subject to sampling variability. Data relate to the calendar week ending nearest the 15th day of the month. The employed total includes all wage and salary workers, self-employed persons, and unpaid workers in family-operated enterprises. Persons in institutions are not included. Because of rounding, sums of individual items do not necessarily equal totals. • Beginning with January 1957, two groups numbering between 200,000 and 300,000 which were formerly classified as employed (under "with a job but not at work") were assigned to different classifications, mostly to the unemployed. For a full explanation, see Monthly Report on the Labor Force, February 1957 (Current Population Reports, Labor Force, Series P-57, No. 176). Survey week contained legal holiday. Includes persons who had a job or business but who did not work during the survey week because of illness, bad weather, vacation, or labor dispute. Prior to January 1957, also included were persons on layoff with definite instructions to return to work within 30 days of layoff and persons who had new jobs to which they were scheduled to report within 30 days. Most of the persons in these groups have, since that time, been classified as unemployed. SOURCE: U. S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census. TABLE A-2. Statistics from 1957 forward are subject to revision when new benchmarks become available. These series are based upon establishment reports which cover all full- and part-time employees in nonagricultural establishments who worked during, or received pay for, any part of the pay period ending nearest the 15th of the month. Therefore, persons who worked in more than one establishment during the reporting period are counted more than once. Proprietors, selfemployed persons, unpaid family workers, and domestic servants are excluded. * Preliminary. Data for Federal establishments refer to continental United States; they relate to civilian employees who worked on, or received pay for, the last day of the month. State and local government data exclude, as nominal employees, elected officials of small local units and paid volunteer firemen. NOTE: For a description of these series, see Techniques of Preparing Major BLS Statistical Series, BLS Bull. 1168 (1954). SOURCE: U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics for all series except those for the Federal Government, which is prepared by the U. S. Civil Service Commission, and that for Class I railroads, which is prepared by the U. S. Interstate Commerce Commission. |
