STATEMENT WITH RESPECT TO PURCHASE OF TREES

The new trees which were planted on the Capitol Grounds, not furnished from the Botanic Garden Poplar Point Nursery, were purchased from several nurseries, which are located in plant hardiness zones similar to that of Washington, D.C. Each year, requests for plant catalogs are sent to the many wholesale nurseries and plantgrowers. These catalogs are inspected and items noted for future needs on the grounds. Many nurseries list plant material which they carry in very limited quantities and sizes, or do not have in stock at all; therefore when we are looking for certain trees, we have to contact these nurseries that list the material for verification. Several sources are checked into for the same material and the best material at the lowest price is purchased. In the past years many of the larger wholesale nurseries have been visited and material inspected for purchase for the grounds. Material has been purchased from nurseries in the following cities this past year: Waynesboro, Va., Oak Grove, Va., McMinnville, Tenn., Norfolk, Va., and Westminister, Md.

The prices for the trees vary. The slower growing trees are more costly than the fastest growing trees. The following are a few examples of prices for trees which were purchased last year:
