actually result from the creation of the Office of Administrative Management and the strengthening of the program as outlined in this report. But if the present inconsistent and uncoordinated methods of, and in some cases negative attitude toward, administering the various phases of the program resulted in estimated savings of $74,388,170 and 1,853 employees by the 25 departments and agencies for the period of July 1, 1950, to April 1, 1952,52 we have no hesitance in estimating that the foreseeable economies in terms of dollars and manpower will exceed this figure many times over. 52 In many cases departments and agencies claimed it was impossible to estimate savings. Of these figures $43,144,379 and 10,783 persons were reported by the Department of Defense which was authorized to report only a sampling of their program undertakings and results. |
