The data are in some respects necessarily approximate, and are based on the yearly earnings reported annually to stockholders without adjustment for surplus charges and credits except that the years 1942 and 1943 reflect renegotiation settlements made in the succeeding years. For example, taxes are as accrued before adjustments.

Includes medical and religious organizations, foundations, hospitals, libraries. (These data are as of Dec. 31, 1949. At Mar. 13, 1950, there were 246,067 stockholders of record.)

Substantially all dividends are received for individuals.

Includes shares of stock held by various charitable and educational institutions and insurance companies, as well as by brokers whose holdings are for account of their numerous individual customers. Includes trustees, guardians, and estates.

Brokerage firms having offices throughout the country where United States Steel's stocks are purchased locally; accordingly, it is believed that the residence addresses of the beneficial owners whose stocks are held by brokers and others have approximately the same pattern of geographical distribution as is characteristic of those individual United States Steel stockholders whose addresses are known.
