INTRODUCTORY NOTE.

ANY inquiries have come to this library which we have been able to answer only by reference to our file of newspapers. In some instances much time would have been saved if we had known whether a paper of specified name had been issued on a certain day in a given month; in other cases, whether the paper in question, of the required date, was in the library. This list has been compiled to assist in answering similar questions in the future. Compiled mainly for the use of assistants in the library, and students in Richmond, it will, however, be of much service to investigators at a distance, who may be saved much expense and time by knowing beforehand the exact dates of the newspapers to be found here. The list will serve also as a check list for libraries collecting Virginia and Southern newspapers.

The titles of the newspapers have been arranged, first, according to the library in which the papers are deposited. A second arrangement follows of the same titles, by States, alphabetically. A third arrangement is chronological, giving a list of all the newspapers in the three libraries, published in each year, beginning with 1723. For this year there is in the State Library a copy of a reprint of the New England Courant. The three arrangements are followed by an index of all the titles, and of the cities in which the papers have been published.

Brief historical notes of several prominent Richmond papers have been inserted. But there has been no attempt to prepare for this list extensive notes about the publishers and editors of all the Virginia and Southern newspapers represented. To have done so would have delayed the publication of the list, and would not have added materially to the use of the papers by library assistants and by historical students. To know the history of a newspaper is not of such importance to the historical investigator as to know where he can find a copy of a particular date.

Acknowledgment is hereby made to Miss Isabel Maury, Regent of the Confederate Museum, for her interest and co-operation.
