1. Grants-(a) Research.-Approximately 2,800 grants will be supported in 1964 as compared to 2,050 in 1963, and 1,683 in 1962. In addition funds are provided for general research support grants and clinical research

centers.

(b) Fellowships.-Approximately 1,167 fellowships will be supported in 1964 as compared to 826 in 1963, and 719 in 1962.

(c) Training. It is estimated that 1,820 grants will be awarded in 1964 for 7,214 trainee stipends as compared to 1,389 grants for 5,308 trainee stipends in 1963, and 1,123 grants for 4,352 trainee stipends in 1962.

(d) State control programs.-Grants are made to States and territories on a formula basis. These grants help to plan, establish, improve, and administer statewide mental health and mental retardation programs, including development of community services at the local level; and the development of pilot projects and demonstrations in areas such as juvenile delinquency, mental illness, school mental health, alcoholism, aging, and industrial mental health.

2. Direct operations-(a) Research.-Laboratory and clinical research is conducted in neurobiology, neurochemistry, neurophysiology, psychology, neuropsychiatric studies, socio-environmental studies, and neuropharmacology (including narcotics and barbiturate addiction).

(b) Collaborative studies. The programs in this activity are concerned with biometry, psychopharmacology, special program development and a community demonstration unit. These programs collaborate in research efforts and extension of research knowledge with state and local mental health programs.

(c) Training activities. Support is given for in-service training of qualified staff members in subjects related to the field of mental health and a program to train psychiatrists for careers in the Public Health Service.

(d) Professional and technical assistance. These operations consist of assistance to States in developing, and expanding local mental health programs through consultation services, and field studies in developing preventive and outpatient services, survey and development of special areas in mental health; consultation services hospitals and related institutions.

1. Grants (a) Research.-Approximately 3,423 grants will be supported in 1964 as compared to 2,989 in 1963, and 2,583 in 1962. In addition, funds are provided for general research support grants, and clinical research

centers.

(b) Fellowships.-Approximately 672 awards will be supported in 1964 as compared to 612 in 1963, and 500 in 1962.

(c) Training-Funds for 1964 will provide assistance to 104 schools of medicine, osteopathy, and public health for support of undergraduate training. Funds will also provide for 343 grants for graduate research and clinical training including 1,554 traineeships. Comparable schools, grants, and traineeships were 104, 313, and 1,407 in 1963 and 103, 240, and 1,079 in 1962.

2. Direct operations (a) Research.-Laboratory and clinical research is conducted to aid in the understanding of the cardiovascular system and its diseases, with emphasis in therapeutic agents, diagnostic instrumentation, surgery and clinical medicine.

(b) Collaborative studies.-This activity conducts and supports epidemiological, geographical pathology, biometrics research, and clinical trial studies to seek knowledge of the causes and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Causal factors are sought both by intensive study of "natural experiments" in population groups and by experimental modification of suspected factors by dietary, drug, or other measures.

(c) Training activities.-Inservice training is provided for positions requiring unique combinations of cardiovascular training and experience.

(b) Fellowships.-An estimated 274 awards will be made in 1964 for postdoctoral, special and research career fellowships. This compares to 254 awards in 1963 and

(c) Training-Funds for 1964 will provide approximately 194 grants to train individuals in allergy and immunology, tropical medicine, infectious diseases, parasitology, mycology and rickettsiology. This compares to 174 grants in 1963 and 168 in 1962.

2. Direct operations-(a) Research.-Laboratory, field allergic, infectious and parasitic diseases. The increase in and clinical research is conducted in the broad fields of 1964 will provide for the expansion of studies in allergy and immunology and infectious diseases.

(b) Fellowships.-Approximately 187 fellowships will be supported in 1964 as compared to 183 in 1963 and 125 in 1962.

(c) Training.-Approximately 314 graduate training grants will be supported in 1964 as compared to 283 in 1963 and 234 in 1962. These grants are made to training institutions to establish and improve programs to train teachers and clinical investigators in neurology, ophthalmology and otology. Approximately 282 traineeships will be awarded to individuals for specialized postgraduate training in 1964 as compared to 272 in 1963 and 267 in 1962. Funds for 1964 will support approximately 40 undergraduate training grants in 1964 as compared to 40 in 1963. The undergraduate program was initiated in 1963 to complement the graduate training grant program and to stimulate the development of improved training programs. 2. Direct operations-(a) Research.-Research is being conducted on disorders of the brain, and spinal cord and peripheral nerves, such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, apoplexy, and Parkinson's disease; on neuromuscular disorders, such as muscular dystrophy; and on visual and other sensory disorders, such as glaucoma, uveitis, cataract, and hearing impairments.

(b) Collaborative studies.-These studies include the coordination and central service activities for the collaborative project on cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and other neurological and sensory disorders of childhood; the perinatal physiology studies using primates; and epidemiological, biometric and international studies relating to cerebrovascular disease, speech and hearing disorders, and other disorders affecting the central nervous system. (c) Training activities.-Support is given for inservice training of qualified staff members in subjects related to 1,664 neurological and other sensory disorders.
