Manufacturing and industrial statistics.-Periodic surveys are made of production, shipments, orders, and materials consumed for important commodities. Data on manufacturers' sales, orders, and inventories for total manufacturing and about 17 industry breakdowns, plus 2 subgroups, are provided monthly. An annual survey of manufactures produces data on the number, size, industrial classification, and location of manufacturing establishments and of measures of factory operations such as employment, shipments, inventories, etc. In 1963, additional periodic surveys will be undertaken for important new products and growth industries. In 1964, development of data on industrial capacity, utilization of capacity, and new plant investment will be initiated, and monthly reports of the consumption and stocks of materials will be published. 3. Transportation statistics.-Effective methods are developed and tested for undertaking periodic surveys in transportation areas as directed by statutory requirements. In 1964, a guide to the sources of transportation data will be prepared and a series of commodity transportation indexes for truck, water, oil, pipeline, and air will be initiated. 4. Agriculture statistics.-Information is compiled on cotton ginned at 11 dates during the ginning season. 5. Foreign trade and shipping statistics.-Monthly, quarterly, and annual reports are published on the kind, quantity, shipping weight, dollar value of imports and exports, and mode of shipping. In 1963, import commodity classifications will be revised to conform with the Tariff Classification Act, the export classifications will begin to be revised to conform with the standard industrial classification, and the publication of the comprehensive annual reports, Foreign Commerce and Navigation of the United States, will be resumed. In 1964, import data tabulations will be prepared on a cost, insurance, and freight basis. 6. Population statistics.-This activity includes current estimates of the number of households, the farm population, school enrollment, personal income, population mobility, and other characteristics of the population, as well as annual estimates of the population of the United States and of each of the States, and projections of future population. In 1963, work will begin on improving estimates of population for States and metropolitan areas. The quarterly survey of consumer buying intentions is being established as a regular census program. In 1964, current population estimates will be provided for State and a number of local areas, projections of future populations will be improved, and special demographic surveys on national and metropolitan area problems will be undertaken. 7. Construction and housing statistics.-Monthly reports are published for housing starts, residential construction authorized by building permits, and the volume of construction activity. Quarterly data are provided on expenditures for residential alterations and repairs. Construction price indexes are being developed. In 1963, a quarterly survey of non-Federal public construction will be initiated. In 1964, the monthly surveys on construction value-in-place and on housing starts will be improved, and construction price indexes for new houses will be developed. National estimates on the number of dwelling units that are vacant are computed quarterly and estimates of the proportion that are owner-occupied are published annually. In 1964, vacancy data will be provided for a number of standard metropolitan statistical areas, and a program of technical assistance to local areas for housing vacancy surveys will be initiated. 8. State and local government statistics.--Reports are published annually providing national estimates of total governmental finances, employment, and payrolls, and comparative statistics for State governments and larger cities. In 1963, quarterly estimates of revenues and expenditures will be provided. In 1964, a program of technical service to State and local governments will be initiated, annual data on finances and employment of local governments in the 122 largest standard metropolitan statistical areas will be provided, and a current directory of local governments will be established. 9. Statistical abstract and special reports.-Seasonally adjusted business cycle indicators are published monthly. The Statistical Abstract, issued annually, summarizes government and private statistics on the industrial, social, political, and economic activities of the United States. Historical and other general reports are published periodically, including a report showing for each county in the United States the number and kind of all business establishments and their employment and payrolls. Selected data, in which the unit of tabulation is the company rather than the establishment, are published annually. In 1963, the Congressional District Data Book, including redistricting, will be issued. In 1964 the county business report will be placed on an annual basis. 10. General research.-Research is conducted on statistical survey methods and techniques, and questionnaire response for the purpose of increasing accuracy, output, and usefulness of statistical data per unit of cost. For 1964, research in survey methods and techniques will be expanded, a research center for census and survey measurement methods will be established, and the feasibility of collecting certain new types of information will be tested.
