APPENDIX II

STANDING COMMITTEES OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF

REPRESENTATIVES, 1789-1954

Before the revision of the rules of the House of Representatives in 1880, the preposition for customarily appeared in the title, Committee for the District of Columbia; and the preposition of appeared in the titles, Committee of Accounts, Committee of Commerce, Committee of Elections, Committee of Ways and Means, Committee of Commerce and Manufactures, and Committee of Revisal and Unfinished Business. In the following list, as elsewhere in this inventory, the preposition on is uniformly employed for every standing committee both before and after 1880, except for one committee that did not survive to 1880, the Committee of Revisal and Unfinished Business.

The abbreviation H. J. used below for the standard edition of the printed House journal is preceded by numbers indicating the particular Congress and session and is followed by page citations. The naming of antecedent and successor committees is for the general guidance of persons referring to committee records.
