The late Rev. John Brown, of Whitburn, son of the Commentator, says, in reference to Ralph Erskine, "His sermons are numerous, and replete with Scriptural truth and Scriptural devotion, and have long been held in high estimation by the religious of all denominations. And the celebrated Hervey, in his Theron and Aspasio, referring to Ralph and Ebenezer Erskine's Works, expresses himself in the following words:-'Were 1 to read to refine my taste or improve my style, I would prefer Bishop Atterbury's Sermons, Dr. Bates' Works, or Mr. Seed's Discourses; but were I to read with a single view to the edification of heart in true faith, solid comfort, and evangelical holiness, I would have recourse to Messrs. Erskine, and take their volumes for my guide and companion, and even for my familiar friend." Of the Gospel Sonnets, by Mr. Ralph, he says I have met with none more evangelical, or more useful."
