PREFACE.

T has been the author's aim, in the following pages,

to place every reader, who may happen to be suffering from any disease of the skin, in a position to carry out, efficiently and yet economically, even when residing in the country or travelling, the directions given by his medical attendant respecting the use of those baths which form so important a feature in the modern treatment of these affections, and the value of which has been so amply attested, particularly in my own department at St. John's Hospital. Rather more than six years ago I published, in the shape of a brief sketch, now out of print, the results of an extensive series of trials made to determine the best form of apparatus for administering the bath most in request for skin affections -that with simple vapour. During the interval, more than six thousand cases have passed through my hands
