to pay out of the road funds of District Number 1 of said county, to John Turnage the sum of $50.00 for road work in District No. 1 of said county performed during the month of November, 1923. Said John Turnage having taken over a contract on said roads and on account of being a relative to a member of said board of supervisors his pay could not be allowed.

Sec. 2. That this act take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 563.

HOUSE BILL No. 731.

AN ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Lawrence county, Mississippi, in its discretion, to borrow the sixteenth section school funds of said county to be used for other county purposes.

Lawrence county may borrow sixteenth section funds for general purposes. SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the board of supervisors of Lawrence county, Mississippi, be and it is hereby authorized and empowered, in its discretion to borrow for a term not to exceed fifteen (15) years, at six per cent interest per annum, a sum not to exceed $25,000.00 of the sixteenth section school funds of said county, to be used by said board for general county purposes; provided the full faith and credit of Lawrence county shall be pledged for the safe accounting and repayment of said money so borrowed.

Sec. 2. That this act take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 564.

HOUSE BILL No. 807.

AN ACT to authorize and empower the board of supervisors of Lawrence county, Mississippi, in their discretion, to pay to F. T. L. Tynes, road contractor, for work done on public roads in district number three in said county, a balance of seventeen hundred and ninety-nine and 75/100 dollars ($1799.75) claimed to be due him under a road contract entered into with him by the board of supervisors for the term beginning November 6th, 1916, and ending November 6th, 1920, the above sum of money, being claimed by him as a balance due him under the said contract.

Lawrence county may pay F. T. L. Tynes for road work.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the board of supervisors of Lawrence county, Mississippi, be and they are hereby authorized and empowered

in their discretion after an investigation of the facts and after hearing on the merits, to pay to F. T. L. Tynes the sum of seventeen hundred and ninety nine and 75/100 dollars ($1799.75) or so much thereof as the said board may find on due and proper investigation to be justly due and owing for the working of roads in district number three of said Lawrence county, Mississippi, under a contract made with him by the board of supervisors of said county at the November meeting, 1916, for the period of four years, the said allowance, if any, to be paid out of the general revenue funds of the county or out of the general county road funds as may be determined by the board.

Sec. 2. That this act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 565.

SENATE BILL No. 329.

AN ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Leake county, Mississippi, to make a special advalorem tax levy upon the taxable property of district number 5 of said county for public highways to remedy the failure of the retiring board to make levy for said purposes for the year 1924, and to borrow money for said purposes.

Leake county authorized to make special levy in district No. 5.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the board of supervisors of Leake county, Mississippi, are hereby authorized to make a three mill special levy on all advalorem taxable property in said district No. 5 in said county for public highways, to supply the deficit of said district which deficit was caused by the failure of the retiring board to make any highway levy in the said district No. 5, for the fiscal year 1923.

Levy to be used in retiring deficit.

Sec. 2. That the said three mill levy authorized by this act shall be in addition to the regular authorized levy, and shall be applied by the said board to the deficit caused by the retiring board.

Authority to borrow $2,000.00.

Sec. 3. That the board of supervisors of Leake county, be and they are hereby authorized in their discretion, to borrow the sum of two thousand dollars ($2,000.00) or so much as they may deem necessary, for time not to exceed one year after the passage of this

act. And they are further authorized to pay and discharge such indebtedness out of taxes collected under the provision of this act..

Sec. 4. That this act is intended as an emergency act and shall expire immediately after the three mill levy is made and the indebtedness paid.

Sec. 5. That this act take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 566.

SENATE BILL NO. 259.

AN ACT to authorize and empower the board of supervisors of Leake county to build a highway, including all necessary bridges, from either the Carthage and Canton highway or the Carthage and Forest highway into supervisors district number four of said county, so as to give an outlet from that district to the county site at a maximum cost of thirty thousand dollars ($30,000.00) by a direct tax and spread out the cost thereof over a period of five years so that a tax shall be levied and collected each year sufficient to pay one fifth of the cost and interest thereon and to borrow not exceeding said amount of thirty thousand dollars ($30,000.00) and issue bonds therefor in denominations of one fifth of the principal sum, one maturing each year until the whole amount is paid, under certain conditions herein provided, and to pay interest on said amounts so borrowed at a rate not exceeding six per centum per annum.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the board of supervisors of Leake county, be and it is hereby authorized and empowered to build a highway, including all necessary bridges, from either the Carthage and Canton highway or the Carthage and Forest highway into supervisors district number four of said county, so as to give an outlet from that district to the county site, in and fo rsaid county at a maximum cost of thirty thousand dollars ($30,000.00) by a direct tax and spread out the cost thereof over a period of five years so that a tax shall be levied and collected each year sufficient to pay onefifth of the total cost and annual interest.

May borrow money to build highway-Issue bonds for same.

Sec. 2. That the board of supervisors of said county is further authorized and empowered to borrow not exceeding said sum of thirty thousand dollars ($30,000.00) with which to build a highway, including all necessary bridges, from either the Carthage and Canton highway or the Carthage and Forest highway into supervisors

district number four of said county, so as to give an outlet from that district to the county site, and issue bonds of the county therefor in denominations of one-fifth of the principal sum so borrowed and provided that one of said bonds shall mature and be paid annually until the whole amount is paid; provided, however, that before the issuance of any of the bonds mentioned, the board of supervisors shall publish notice of its intention to issue same, said notice to be published each week for three weeks in some newspaper having a general circulation in said county before the meeting of the said board at which it proposes to issue said bonds, and if within that time twenty per cent of the qualified electors of the county shall protest against the issuance of said bonds, then said. bonds shall not be issued unless authorized by a majority of the qualified electors voting at an election to be called and held for that purpose in that county.

Interest on bonds not to exceed 6%.

Sec. 3. That the board of supervisors of said county are further authorized and empowered to pay interest on said bonds as herein provided at a rate not exceeding six per cent per annum.

Sec. 4. That this act take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 567.

HOUSE BILL No. 690.

AN ACT authorizing the board of supervisors of Leake county to pay to Shelby Waggoner for work done on the Pioneers highway in the year 1923.

Leake county may pay Shelby Waggoner for work on public road.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the board of supervisors of Leake county, be and the same is hereby authorized and empowered, in its discretion, to pay to Shelby Waggoner, the sum of three hundred seventy two dollars ($372.00), or any part thereof as it may deem just and right for work done on the road known as the Pioneer highway in said county, in the year 1923.

Sec. 2. That this act take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 568.

SENATE BILL No. 37.

AN ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Lee county, Mississippi, to pay Mr. George McNeil a sum not to exceed $75.00 or so much thereof as they may deem proper and right, to compensate him for. loss of a horse which was injured by falling through a defective bridge in said county.

Lee county may pay George McNeil for horse injured.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the board of supervisors of Lee county, Mississippi, be and they are hereby authorized, in their discretion, to pay to George McNeil, a sum not to exceed $75.00, or so much. thereof as they may deem proper and right to compensate him for loss of a horse injured by falling through a bridge in said county.

Sec. 2. That this act take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 569.

HOUSE BILL No. 331.

AN ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Lee county to pay B. H. Wade for a mule killed by order of the county veterinarian on account of rabies.

Lee county may pay B. H. Wade for mule killed.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Mississippi, That the board of supervisors of the county of Lee, be, and the same is hereby authorized, in their discretion, to pay the sum of one hundred fifty dollars ($150.00) or so much thereof as they may deem just, if any, for a mule owned by him and killed in 1923 by order of the county veterinarian, on account of its having rabies, caused by mad dog bite.

Sec. 2. That this act take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
