Exterior pointing and caulking increased from $21,000 to $22,000..

The $22,000 is requested as part of the preventive maintenance program to be allocated to the repair of exterior stonework on the Capitol grounds. This is a recurring program to stabilize the rate of deterioration in order to prevent normal wear and tear from becoming major items of rehabilitation. A 5% inflationary increase of $1,000 is requested for fiscal year 1988.

Disposal of solid waste increased from $52,500 to $55,500..

This work is anticipated to be performed under contract in fiscal year 1988, and involves the removal of solid waste from various buildings in the Capitol Complex. These include the Capitol, the House and Senate Office Buildings, the Botanic Garden and the Supreme Court Building, funding for which is provided in another appropriation. fiscal year 1988, an inflationary increase of $3,000 is requested to cover the anticipated cost of these services.

Rental of shuttle vans increased from $6,000 to $7,000..

Funds are requested to lease vans for the Shuttle Service provided by the Architect's office to carry Members of Congress, officers of the House and Senate, and their staffs to locations throughout the Legislative group of buildings. The Shuttle Service is authorized by the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act, 1977, (Public Law 94-440, 90 Stat, 1453) and operates Monday through Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the Senate Office Buildings at one end of the Capitol Complex to House Office Building Annex #2, at the other end and, as required, to the Senate Computer Center located at 400 North Capitol Street. An inflationary increase of $1,000 is requested to cover the cost of this service.

Replacement of Bituminous Concrete Paving at Various Locations.

Repairs to the retaining wall at the southeast corner of the
Terrace structure are requested for fiscal year 1988.

The retaining wall at the southeast corner of the Terrace structure requires remedial repairs. This project will include the removal of approximately 120 pieces of marble from the west side wall; patching approximately 77 pieces; the brick fill will be removed and rebuilt; and the stone will be reset, anchored, caulked and cleaned. The estimated cost for this project is approximately $30,000.

Replacement of Concrete Sidewalks at Various Locations of the
Capitol Grounds........

The replacement of concrete sidewalks on the Capitol Grounds is an ongoing program for which funds are requested as the need arises. The work to be performed is the replacement of deteriorated sidewalks in areas where major cracks or upheavals exist. This work is necessary to prevent further damage to adjacent sidewalk areas, to maintain a high level of public safety on the walkways, and to prevent unsightly temporary patches from detracting from the appearance of the grounds.

Approximately 3,900 square yards of sidewalk will be replaced with exposed aggregate concrete to match existing replacement areas. The estimated cost of this work is approximately $60 per square yard, and including contingency will total $259,000. Nearly two thirds of the work will occur on the Senate side of the grounds, and the remainder will take place on the House side.
