Obligations for fiscal year 1969 were $28.2 million.

Also, project grants for activities of an experimental nature. Assistance to regional (interstate) commissions and agencies to establish special education services. Obligations for fiscal year 1969 were $1.5 million.

Guaranteed and insured loans to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in eligible institutions.

Loans may only be used to defray educational costs.

Repayment of loans to be made over period of 5 to 10 years after student leaves school. Payment deferred during any period while borrower is attending an eligible institution on a full-time basis; also while serving in Armed Forces, Peace Corps, or VISTA.

Amounts and terms of loans vary; up to $1,500 per academic year, and up to $7,500 total aggregate loan.

Federal payment of interest charges (for students with adjusted family income of less than $15,000) during school years and during deferrment periods.

Interest rate varies, and is set by Congress.

ELIGIBILITY

Persons enrolled in eligible institutions-ranging from vocational and technical schools to degree-granting institutions. APPLICATION PROCESS

SPECIAL COMMENTS

Lender negotiates a contractual agreement with a State or private nonprofit guarantee agency, or the Office of Education. Loans are available to guarantee agencies on a dollar-for-dollar basis for the purpose of strengthening the reserve funds used by these agencies to guarantee loans. These loans are available when the agency's reserve is 75 percent encumbered and must be matched by unencumbered non-Federal funds.
