COLLEGE HOUSING

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE

Loans and annual debt-service grants are made by HUD to help colleges and hospitals finance the construction, rehabilitation, or purchase of housing and related facilities.

Facilities eligible for construction, rehabilitation, or purchase with loan or grant aid are college residence halls, faculty and married-student housing, dining facilities, college unions, and housing for student nurses and interns.

Each institution must develop its own plans, subject to local zoning and building codes, and must arrange for competitive bidding.

ELIGIBILITY

Public or private nonprofit colleges and universities that offer at least a 2-year program acceptable for a bachelor's degree, and public or private nonprofit hospitals that operate nursing schools or internship and resident programs.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FACILITIES

Formula grants.

Funds may be used for construction, rehabilitation, and improvement of buildings and facilities.

Priority is given where there is (1) a substantial expansion of student enrollment, (2) need for health care facilities, and (3) for expansion to carry out extension and continuing education programs.

ELIGIBILITY

Public community colleges and technical institutes. APPLICATION PROCESS

File application forms with State commission on higher education. State commission ranks projects and recommends grants based on priority system set forth in State plan.

Applications are approved at Office of Educational regional offices.

SPECIAL COMMENTS

Actual grant percentage is established in each State plan, and may vary between States. May be up to 50 percent of the eligible development cost of the construction project.

Obligations for fiscal year 1970 were $40.3 million; for fiscal year 1971—$43 million (estimate).
