Project grants to States for the preparation of comprehensive statewide historic surveys and plans for the preservation, for public benefit, of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects significant in American history, architecture, archeology, and culture.

HILL-BURTON PROGRAM, CONSTRUCTION
DIAGNOSTIC TREATMENT CENTERS

HOSPITAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH CENTERS
LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE

Federal grants, matched by local funds.

Funds may be used for (1) construction of new buildings, (2)
expansion or remodeling of existing buildings, (3) purchase of
initial equipment, (4) modernization of obsolete facilities, and
(5) replacement of obsolete equipment.

Long-Term Care Facilities include nursing homes, chronic
disease hospitals, and long-term units in general hospitals.
Funds cannot be used for purchase of land, except for Public
Health Centers.

ELIGIBILITY

State and local public agencies, and private nonprofit organizations.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Application must be approved by both the State agency and the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. SPECIAL COMMENTS

Federal share of financing varies from State to State-ranging from one-third to two-thirds of total eligible costs of construction and equipment.

(MORTGAGE INSURANCE)

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE

Guaranteed and insured loans.

To finance construction or rehabilitation of facilities, including major movable equipment.

Applies to medical, dental, or optometric groups. Facilities for preventive, diagnostic, and treatment service.

ELIGIBILITY

Private nonprofit sponsors.

SPECIAL COMMENTS

Maximum mortgage equal to 90 percent replacement cost, in most cases. Not to exceed $5 million. Maximum term, 25 years. Face value of mortgages insured for 1970: new facilities-$4.2 million; existing facilities-$1.5 million.
