version from the daily routine of a laborious office, is the embodiment of the experience and observation of twenty-five years, with reference to this description of literature. It originated in a desire to contribute something to the furtherance of the right education of the young men of my country, and the extent to which it promotes this object will, in my estimation, be the measure of its success.

In this New Edition the original plan has been retained, but it is believed that the important changes that have been made in the matter, have greatly increased the value of the book. The portion devoted to “ Standard Selections” has been improved by the substitution of several pieces of rare excellence, for others of less merit. All the 6 Recent Selections” have been cut out, excepting a few which have become standard favorites, and in their place has been inserted a new collection of the choicest pieces from the more recent productions of eminent orators and poets, both American and English. Among the authors of these new selections are Schurz, Seward, Dana, Curtis, Sumner, Bright, Macaulay, Whittier, Harte, Aldrich, and Miller.

The original edition contained some pieces inspired by the then stormy and perilous national crisis [1864], and consequently unsuited to the present changed condition of things. From this edition all selections have been excluded which are not in harmony with the new spirit of this opening centennial period, the “fine, sweet spirit” of reconciliation, fraternity, union, and peace.

If I might venture, in conclusion, a word of advice to instructors, I should urge that boys and girls be encouraged and stimulated to commit to memory, for declamation and recitation, pieces of the right sort, not ephemeral off-hand productions of little or no literary merit, — but pieces from classical authors, pieces worth treasuring in the mind, gems of poetry and eloquence, embodying the best thoughts in the best words.
