with two grip holes or slots to facilitate removal of the head. The lawn spray heads shall be provided with volume and pressure control, and with orifices or nozzles which are removable and interchangeable without disturbance of the body of the head or the ground around it. Shrubbery heads shall be removable and interchangeable, and shall be provided with volume control adjustment. (b) Pop-up, nonrevolving sprinkler heads.-Pop-up, nonrevolving sprinkler heads shall be of the sizes and capacities called for on the plans or stated in the special provisions, and unless otherwise specified shall have a 4-inch inlet. The top flange or plate shall be not less than 2%-inches in diameter, unless otherwise specified in the special provisions. The pop-up portion of the head shall return freely to its closed position when the head, in dry condition, is inclined at an angle of 30° from the horizontal. The heads shall have adjustment for volume and area coverage and shall be accessible from the top without disturbance of the body of the head. Orifices and nozzles shall be removable and interchangeable from the top of the head. (c) Pop-up rotary sprinkler heads.-Pop-up rotary heads shall be of the sizes and capacities called for on the plans or stated in the special provisions. All working parts shall operate smoothly without stalling of the rotary action while under specified operating pressure. The complete working assembly shall be removable from above ground as a unit to permit adjustment and servicing. The orifices or nozzles shall be interchangeable and replaceable from the top of the head without disurbance of the assembly or body of the head or the ground around it. The heads shall be such that at least three different sizes of orifices or nozzles may be interchangeably used. Part-circle heads shall be adjustable to any part of a circle from 90° to 270°, or greater range, while in operation. Rotary heads placed along curbs, paved areas, roadways, on top of walls, and at other locations where the Engineer may determine it to be desirable, shall have an anti-splash device to avoid water splash on areas not intended to be watered through the head. 714.11 Vacuum Breakers. Vacuum breakers (antisiphon valves) shall be either the pressure type or the atmospheric type, as indicated on the plans or as set forth in the special provisions. They shall be bronze bodied, with machined valve seat, and with working pressure rating to 150 psi. They shall be furnished with fittings necessary for assembly and installation as indicated on the plans. 714.12 Protective Valve Boxes, Sieves, and Drains. Concrete or cast iron boxes with concrete or noncorrosive metal covers shall be provided for gate valves and they shall be of dimensions adequate to protect the valve and union and to permit servicing thereof. Section control valves and manual drain valves shall be protected with noncorrosive metal sleeves with lock caps, furnished in lengths sufficient to enclose and clear the bonnet portion of the valve as installed. Protective sleeves shall be furnished with integral flanges to resist removal of the sleeve as installed or with 12-gage copper wire for fastening the sleeve to valve or pipe. Where more than one valve is installed at one general location, a concrete or cast iron box, with suitable cover, large enough to house all of such grouped valves may be substituted for the individual sleeves. Rock or gravel for drain sumps below pop-up rotary sprinkler heads and drain valves shall be crushed or uncrushed, free-draining, reasonably well graded, and containing no material which would be retained on a 4-inch sieve. All boxes, sleeves, pipe, covers, and caps at valves shall be set with the tops thereof flush with the final finished grade established for the adjoining area at the site. 714.13 Valve Keys, Tools, Accessories, Data, and Warranties. Two valve keys shall be furnished for the manual operation of valves. When the valves require different types of keys, two of each such type shall be furnished. Valve keys shall be of durable, corrosion-resistant metal, with comfortable handles and of proper lengths. Tools and accessories necessary for the adjustment, normal field repair, and operation of the several parts and components of the irrigation system shall be furnished and delivered to the Engineer. Manufacturer's or dealer's installation instructions, parts lists, maintenance and operation manuals and instructions, and like available data shall be furnished the Engineer. Manufacturer's warranties on the equipment and parts of the irrigation system, which warranties are available to purchasers, shall be furnished the Engineer and made effective to the Government as the purchaser thereof. 715.01 Section 715.-PILING Untreated Timber Piles. Untreated timber piles shall conform to AASHO M 168. 715.02 Treated Timber Piles. Unless otherwise specified, treated timber piling shall be either Douglas fir, larch, southern yellow pine, Norway pine, or red oak conforming to AASHO M 168 and shall be treated with the preservative called for in the bid schedule by the pressure method prescribed in AWPA Standard C1 in accordance with requirements shown on the plans or in the special provisions. Marine piles for use in salt water shall be Douglas fir or southern pine treated with creosote in accordance with the special provisions. 715.03 Concrete Piles. Concrete shall conform to section 601. Unless otherwise shown on the plans, the concrete shall be class AA. Billet steel and rail steel reinforcement bars shall conform to section 602. Prestressing reinforcement steel shall conform to subsections 601A.06 and 601A.07. 715.04 Steel Shells. Steel shells shall be of sufficient strength and rigidity to permit their driving and to prevent harmful distortion caused by soil pressures or the driving of adjacent piles, until filled with concrete. The shells shall be sufficiently tight to exclude water during the placing of the concrete. The tip diameter shall be not less than 8 inches and the butt diameter shall be not less than shown on the plans. Shells to be driven without a mandrel shall be equipped with heavy steel driving points. Neither the driving points nor the connecting welds shall project beyond the perimeter of the pile tips. 715.05 Steel Pipes. Steel pipe to be filled with concrete shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A 252, grade 2. Closure plates for closed end piles shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 183 (ASTM A36). Pipes shall be of the diameter shown on the plans. The wall thickness shall not be less than that shown on the plans but in no case less than 3/16 inch. The pipe, including end closures, shall be of sufficient strength to be driven by the specified methods without distortion. Closure plates and connecting welds shall not project beyond the perimeter of the pile tips. 715.06 Structural Steel Piles. Structural steel piles shall be rolled steel sections of the weight and shape called for on the plans. They shall be structural steel meeting the requirements of AASHO M 183 (ASTM A36), provided that where the special provisions call for copper-bearing structural steel, the steel shall contain not less than 0.20 percent nor more than 0.35 percent of copper, except that steel manufactured by the acid-bessemer process shall not be used. Steel piles when placed in the leads shall not exceed the camber and sweep permitted by allowable mill tolerance. Piles bent or otherwise injured will be rejected. 715.07 Sheet Piles. Steel sheet piles shall meet the requirements of ASTM A 328, except that steel produced by the basic-oxygen process will be accepted on the same terms as open hearth and electric furnace steel. All other sheet piles shall meet the requirements prescribed above for the particular material specified. All sheet piles shall conform to the cross-section designated on the plans. The joints shall be practically watertight when the piles are in place. 715.08 Pile Shoes. Pile shoes shall be as called for on the plans. 715.09 Paint. Paint shall conform to the requirements of section 708 for the type specified. Section 716.-MATERIAL FOR TIMBER 716.01 Structural Timber and Lumber. Structural timber, lumber, and piling shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 168. No boxed heart pieces of Douglas fir or redwood shall be used in stringers, floor beams, caps, posts, sills, or rail posts. Boxed heart pieces are defined as timber so sawed that at any point in the length of a sawed piece the pith lies entirely inside the four faces. Yard lumber shall be of the kinds and grade called for on the plans. Round poles and posts shall be of the kinds indicated on the plans. 716.02 Hardware. Machine bolts, driftbolts, and dowels may be either wrought iron or medium steel. Washers shall be cast ogee gray iron castings or malleable castings, unless washers cut from medium steel or wrought-iron plate are indicated on the plans. Bolts shall have square heads and nuts, unless otherwise stipulated. Nails shall be cut or round nails, of standard form. Spikes shall be cut or round spikes or boat spikes, as specified. All hardware shall be galvanized in conformity with ASTM A 153 or cadmium plated in conformity with ASTM A 165, type OS. Ring or shear plate timber connectors shall be of approved design conforming to the requirements of article 2.20.1. (F), AASHO "Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges." 716.03 Treated Timber. Structural timber, lumber, and piling to be treated shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 168. The type of treatment to be used will be shown on the plans or in the special provisions and shall conform to the applicable requirements of AWPA Standard C1. Section 717.-STRUCTURAL METAL 717.01 Structural Steels. Structural steel shall conform to the requirements indicated: (a) General requirements for AASHO M 160 (ASTM A6). (h) Steel for eyebars shall be of (i) Electrodes for welding high 717.02 Bolts and Nuts. Bolts and nuts shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A 307 Grade A, with hexagonal heads and nuts, for steel machine bolts and nuts and tap bolts. 717.03 High Tensile Strength Bolts.
