703.04 Aggregate for Road Mix Bituminous Base. Aggregates for road mix bituminous base construction shall be crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed or natural gravel which meets the quality requirements of AASHO M 62 or M 63 for the specified gradation, except that the sodium sulfate soundness loss shall not exceed 9 per cent and the swell test will not be required.

Gradation shall be as shown in the special provisions. When crushed gravel is used, not less than 50 percent by weight of the particles retained on the No. 4 sieve shall have at least one fractured face.

703.05 Aggregate for Penetration Macadam Base. Aggregates for penetration macadam base shall meet the requirements of subsections 703.07 and 703.12.

703.06 Aggregate for Untreated Base or Surface Courses. Aggregates for untreated base courses shall be crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed or natural gravel which conforms to the quality requirements of AASHO M 147, except as noted below. For surface course aggregates, the requirements of M 147 shall apply, except that the liquid limit shall not exceed 35 and the plasticity index shall be not less than 4 nor more than 9.

Aggregate gradation shall conform to the requirements of Table 703-3 for the designation shown in the bid schedule, in lieu of Table 1, AASHO M 147.

When crushed gravel is used, not less than 50 percent by weight of the particles retained on the No. 4 sieve shall have at least one fractured face.

Unless otherwise noted, percentages passing No. 200 sieve shall not be more than 2/3 of the percentages passing No. 40 sieve.

Gradations of each designated size of aggregates shall be obtained by crushing, screening, and blending processes as may be necessary and shall be in conformity to the percentages shown in Table 703-3.

ments.

Materials otherwise meeting the requirements of this subsection, will be acceptable whenever the gradations of such materials are within the tolerances corresponding to the selected sieve sizes required by the special provisions and whenever such materials produce a compacted course meeting density requirements as specified in subsection 304.06.

703.07 Aggregate for Flexible Pavements-General. (a) Coarse aggregate.-Coarse aggregate (retained on the No. 8 sieve) shall be crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed or natural gravel, and, unless otherwise stipulated, shall conform to the quality requirements of AASHO M 79 except that the sodium sulfate soundness loss shall not exceed 9 per cent or the magnesium sulfate soundness loss shall not exceed 12 percent.

When crushed gravel is used, it shall meet the pertinent requirements of Section 2(a) of AASHO M 62 and not less than 50 per cent by weight of the particles retained on the No. 4 sieve shall have at least one fractured face. The coarse aggregate shall be of such gradation that when combined with other required aggregate fractions in proper proportion the resultant mixture will meet the gradation required under the composition of mixture for the specific type under contract. Only one kind shall be used on the project except by permission of the Engineer.

(b) Fine aggregate.-Fine aggregate (passing the No. 8 sieve) shall consist of natural sand, stone screenings, or slag screenings, or a combination thereof, and unless otherwise stipulated shall conform to the quality requirements of ASTM D 1073. Fine aggregate shall be of such gradation that when combined with other required aggregate fractions

in proper proportion, the resultant mixture will meet the gradation required under the composition of mixture for the specific type under contract.

703.09 Aggregate for Hot Plant-Mix Bituminous Pavement. The provisions of subsection 703.07 (a) and (b) shall apply. The several aggregate fractions for the mixture shall be sized, graded, and combined in such proportions that the resulting composite blend meets one of the grading requirements of table 703-4 as specified in the bid schedule.

The gradings to be used will be shown in the special provisions.

703.10 Aggregate for Cold Plant-Mix Bituminous Pavement. The provisions of subsection 703.07(a) and (b) shall apply.

(a) Aggregate for pavement.-The several aggregate fractions for the mixture shall be sized, graded, and combined in such proportions that the resulting composite blends meet the respective grading requirements of Table 703-5.

(b) Aggregate for top dressing.-The material for the top dressing shall consist of dry sand, stone screenings, or slag screenings so graded that at least 95 per cent shall pass the No. 4 sieve and not more than 40 per cent shall pass the No. 50 sieve.

703.11 Aggregate for Road Mix Bituminous Pavement. Aggregates for road mix bituminous pavement construction shall be crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed or natural gravel which meet the quality requirements of AASHO M 62 or M 63 for the specified gradation, except that the sodium sulfate soundness loss shall not exceed 9 per cent.

When crushed gravel is used, at least 50 percent by weight of the particles retained on the No. 4 sieve shall have at least one fractured face. Gradation shall conform to Grading F of table 703-4 in subsection 703.09.

703.12 Aggregate for Penetration Macadam Pavement. The aggregate shall meet the quality requirements of AASHO M 78 and the gradation requirements of Table 703-6 called for in the bid schedule.
