MATERIALS DETAILS

Section 701.-HYDRAULIC CEMENT

701.01 Portland Cement and Masonry Cement. Cement shall conform to the requirements of the following cited specifications for the type specified or permitted:

[blocks in formation]

Unless otherwise permitted by the Engineer, the product of only one mill of any one brand and type of portland cement shall be used on the project, except for reduction of any excessive air entrainment where air-entraining cement is used.

The Contractor shall provide suitable means for storing and protecting the cement against dampness. Cement which, for any reason, has become partially set or which contains lumps of caked cement will be rejected. Cement salvaged from discarded or used bags shall not be used.

Section 702.-BITUMINOUS MATERIALS

702.01. Asphalt Cements. Asphalt cements shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 20.

702.02 Tars. Tars shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 52.

702.03 Liquid Asphalts. Liquid asphalts shall conform to the requirements of the following specifications:

Rapid curing liquid asphalt

Medium curing liquid asphalt
Slow curing liquid asphalt

AASHO M 81.

AASHO M 82.

AASHO M 141.

702.04 Emulsified Asphalts. Emulsified asphaits shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 140 (ASTM D977). Cationic emulsified asphalts shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 208.

702.05 Application Temperatures. Bituminous materials for the several applications indicated in the specifications shall be applied within the temperature ranges indicated in table 702-3.

[blocks in formation]

Table 702-3 shall apply unless temperature ranges applicable to specific lots of material delivered to the job are supplied by the producer.

702.06 Material for Dampproofing and Waterproofing Concrete and Masonry Surfaces. Material shall conform to the requirements of the following specifications:

[blocks in formation]

Specific viscosity

at 40° C. (104°
F.) (Engler),

not more than. 3.0.
Total distillate,

AASHO M 118, Type B.

- AASHO M 52, RTCB 5 or 6. (d) Asphalt for mop coat. AASHO M 115 (ASTM D449)

type B.

(e) Waterproofing fabric. AASHO M 117 (ASTM D173).

Fabric shall be waterproofed with tar or asphalt, in aggreement with the material specified for prime and mop coats.

(f) Mortar materials shall conform to subsection 705.05

except that the mortar shall be uniformly mixed

to spreading consistency in the proportion of 1 part portland cement to 3 parts fine aggregate. (g) Asphalt plank. Asphalt plank shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 46 (ASTM D517). Unless shown otherwise on the plans, planks shall be 14 inches thick and may be from 6 to 12 inches in width but all pieces for one structure shall be of the same width except such "closers" as may be necessary. The lengths shall be such as to permit the laying of the planks to the best advantage on the surface to be covered but shall not be less than 3 nor more than 8 feet.

(h) Asphalt roll roofing ASTM D 224, 65 pound grade.

Section 703.—AGGREGATES

703.01 Fine Aggregate for Concrete and Incidentals.

(a) Concrete.-Fine aggregate for concrete shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 6, with no deleterious substances in excess of the following percentages:

Clay lumps

Coal and lignite

Material passing No. 200 sieve

Other substances—as shown in the special

provisions.

(b) Granular backfill filter material for underdrains and filler for paved waterways shall be permeable and shall meet the requirements of AASHO M 6, except that soundness tests will not be required and minor variations in grading and content of deleterious substances may be approved by the Engineer.

703.02 Coarse Aggregate for Portland Cement Concrete. Coarse aggregate for concrete shall meet the requirements of AASHO M 80 except that gradation shall conform to table 703-1, for the sizes applicable to the specified classes of concrete.

Lightweight aggregate, if required or permitted by the special provisions, shall conform to the requirements of AASHO M 195, for the grading specified.

703.03 Aggregate for Plant-Mix Bituminous Base.

(a) Coarse aggregate.-Coarse aggregate (retained on the No. 8 sieve) shall be crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed or natural gravel and shall conform to the quality requirements of AASHO M 63 except that the sodium sulfate soundness loss shall not exceed 9 per cent and the magnesium sulfate soundness test will not be required, unless otherwise specified. Gradation shall be in accordance with Table 703-2.

(b) Fine aggregate.-Fine aggregate (passing the No. 8 sieve) shall conform to the quality requirements of ASTM D 1073. It shall be of such a gradation that when combined with the other required aggregate fractions in the proper proportion, the resultant mixture will meet the gradation required.
