606.01 This work shall consist of the construction of guard rail in accordance with these specifications and in reasonably close conformity with the lines and grades shown on the plans or established by the Engineer.

The construction of the various types of guard rail shall include the assembly and erection of all component parts and materials complete in accordance with the plan details and at the locations shown on the plans or as directed.

Materials

606.02 Materials. Materials shall meet the requirements specified in the following subsections:

[blocks in formation]

When the location of manufacturing plants allows, the plants will be inspected periodically for compliance with specified manufacturing methods, and material samples will be obtained for laboratory testing for compliance with materials quality requirements. This can be the basis for acceptance of manufacturing lots as to quality.

All materials will be subject to inspection for acceptance as to condition at the latest practicable time the Engineer has the opportunity to check for compliance prior to or during incorporation of materials in the work.

Construction Requirements

606.03 Posts. Posts shall be set plumb, in hand or mechanically dug holes, or mandrel driven holes, unless driving is permitted. In the latter case the manner of driving shall be such as to avoid battering or distorting of posts. Post holes shall be backfilled with approved material placed in layers of not more than 4 inches and thoroughly compacted by tamping.

606.04 Rail Elements. Rail elements shall be erected in a manner resulting in a smooth, continuous installation. All bolts, except adjustment bolts, shall be drawn tight. Bolts shall be of sufficient length to extend beyond the nuts at least 4 inch but not more than 1⁄2 inch.

Where painting of railing components is specified, any damage to the shop coat of paint shall be corrected by an application of an approved rust-inhibitive primer prior to other painting. Any surfaces inaccessible to painting after erection shall be field painted before erection. The railing components shall be given the specified number of coats of paint uniformly applied by thorough brushing or by approved pressure spray as specified.

Galvanized surfaces which have been abraded so that the base metal is exposed, threaded portions of all fittings and

fasteners and cut ends of bolts shall be protected in a manner as may be specified or directed.

Untreated and salt-treated sawed and surfaced guardrail shall be painted with three coats of white paint to within 8 inches of the ground line. The first 8 inches of posts above the ground shall be painted with two coats of the black paint. Painting shall be done only when the timber is dry, clean and free from frost. No painting shall be done in wet or freezing weather. Each paint coat shall be thoroughly dry before the next coat is applied. Paint shall be applied in heavy coats, completely covering every part of the surface and shall be worked well into the joints and open spaces. It shall be so thoroughly and evenly spread that no excess paint collects at any point.

Rustic guardrail and posts, after erection has been completed, shall be stained with two applications of approved creosote stain, covering the rails and the exposed portions of the posts. The wood shall be dry before being stained. The first coat shall be thoroughly dry before the second is applied. Stain shall not be applied in damp weather.

For beam-type guardrail, metal work not galvanized shall be given one shop coat of red lead, zinc-chromate paint or an approved fast-drying rust-inhibitive primer and two field coats of white or aluminum paint. Untreated wood posts shall be given three coats of paint of the color shown on the plans. Painting shall conform to the requirements of section 611.

Method of Measurement

606.05 Guard rail will be measured by the linear foot from center to center of end posts, except where end connections are made to masonry or steel structures, in which case measurement will be to the face of such structures.

End anchorages and terminal sections will be measured as units of each kind shown in the bid schedule and acceptably completed. If no pay items for end anchorages or terminal sections appear in the bid schedule measurement therefore will be included in the linear foot measurements for completed guardrail.

Basis of Payment

606.06 The accepted quantities of guard rail, determined as provided above, will be paid for at the contract unit price per linear foot for the type specified complete in place. When so specified, end anchorages and terminal sections will be paid for at the contract unit price per each of the kind specified complete in place.

Section 607.-FENCES, GATES, AND CATTLE GUARDS

Description

607.01 This work shall consist of the construction of fence, gates, and cattle guards in accordance with these specifications and the details shown on the plans and in reasonably close conformity with the lines and grades shown on the plans or established by the Engineer.

Materials

607.02 Materials. Materials shall meet the requirements specified in the following subsections:

[blocks in formation]

Materials for cattle guards shall conform to the requirements shown on the plans.

When the location of manufacturing plants allows, the plants will be inspected periodically for compliance with specified manufacturing methods, and material samples will be obtained for laboratory testing for compliance with materials quality requirements. This can be the basis for acceptance of manufacturing lots as to quality.

All materials will be subject to inspection for acceptance as to condition at the latest practicable time the Engineer has the opportunity to check for compliance prior to or during the incorporation of materials in the work.

Construction Requirements

607.03 General. The Contractor shall perform such clearing and grubbing as may be necessary to construct the fence to the required grade and alignment.

At locations where breaks in a run of fencing are required, or at intersections with existing fences, appropriate adjustment in post spacing shall be made to conform to the requirements for the type of closure indicated.

When the plans require that posts, braces or anchors be imbedded in concrete, the Contractor shall install temporary guys, or braces as may be required to hold the posts in proper position until such time as the concrete has set sufficiently to hold the posts. Unless otherwise permitted, no materials shall be installed on posts or strain placed on guys and bracing set in concrete until seven days have elapsed from the time of placing of the concrete.

All posts shall be set vertically and to the required grade and alignment. Cutting of the tops of the posts will be allowed only with the approval of the Engineer and under the conditions specified by him.

Wire or fencing of the size and type required shall be firmly attached to the posts and braces in the manner indicated. All wire shall be stretched taut and shall be installed to the required elevations.

At each location where an electric transmission, distribution or secondary line crosses any of the types of fences covered by these specifications, the Contractor shall furnish and install a ground conforming to the requirements of Section 9 of the National Electric Safety Code, unless otherwise provided.

Cattle guards and connecting fences and gates shall be assembled and placed as shown on the plans and in a workmanlike and substantial manner.

Method of Measurement

607.04 Fence will be measured by the linear foot. Measurement will be along the top of the fence from outside to outside of end posts for each continuous run of fence.

Gates will be measured as complete units of the size and type specified.

Cattle guards will be measured as complete units and any necessary clearing and grubbing required will not be measured directly but will be considered as subsidiary work to pay items of the contract.
