Acreage Controlled The Department of Defense through the three military departments controlled a total of 31.04 million acres of land throughout the world on 30 June 1966 (Table 14). This was an increase of 140 thousand acres, or 0.5 percent over the acreage reported a year earlier. Despite the net increase there were some disposals and returns of public domain lands to the Department of Interior during the year. The worldwide holdings on 30 June 1966 of the Department of Defense were 3.95 million acres less than the 35.0 million of 30 June 1957.

The reduction of 242 thousand acres for the Air Force contrasted with increases of 238 thousand acres reported for the Navy and 145 thousand for the Army during the year ending 30 June 1966. On a Department of Defense basis reductions were reflected in possessions and foreign countries whereas the over-all in the United States increased 360 thousand acres. The United States net change resulted from increases of 72 thousand for the Army and 404 thousand for the Navy and a decrease of 115 thousand for the Air Force.

The largest change within the major types of land tenure was in temporary use and foreign rights. Land used on a temporary basis increased about 270 thousand acres and that used under foreign rights was 117 thousand acres less than that one year earlier. Some lands previously recorded as public land within the United States were reclassified in connection with certain statehood agreements pertaining to the State of Hawaii.

Total land holdings include owned, withdrawn from the public domain, used on a temporary permit, leased and various occupancy rights (easements and foreign rights of different types). The distribution of world

wide acreage controlled by the Department of Defense is shown in Table 14 and Chart 5. Table 15 shows the type of occupancy of the land on a geographic basis. Reference to Table 15 shows that more than onehalf of the total acreage used in the United States is classified as public domain land.

Of Defense-controlled acreage, about 89 percent is within the United States, one percent in the United States possessions, and 10 percent in foreign countries. The Army has 49 percent, the Air Force 37 percent, and the Navy 14 percent of the total world-wide acreage of the Department

of Defense.

Acreage controlled by the military departments in the United States represents 1.21 percent of the total land area in the 50 States and the District of Columbia. The 27,606,219 acres owned or leased, or under permit, represent about 43,135 square miles. This total DoD-controlled acreage in the 50 States and the District of Columbia is a little more than the land area of the State of Tennessee. The relationship of the Defense-controlled lands to the total acreage in the United States is shown in Table 16.

In each of six states the Department of Defense controls more than two million acres. The six are, in order of magnitude of acreage controlled: California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Alaska, and Utah. Total acreage in these six states under Department of Defense control is 20.7 million, representing 75.0 percent of total Defense-controlled acreage in the United States. Table 17 lists the total cost and acreage included in Defense-controlled real property for each state and the District of Columbia.
