AND it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man

Prefer charity to the poor, before hospitality to the rich. This parable is to be understood in a comparative sense. Who shall partake of the blessings of the gospel. "It was the custom of travellers in the East to refresh themselves under hedges by the road side when their stay was short.

For which of you, 'intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? lest haply, after he "hath laid the foundation, and is not able to "finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth "not down first, and consulteth, whether he "be able with ten thousand to meet him that "cometh against him with twenty thousand.?

THEN drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

And he spake this parable unto them, saying,* "What man of you, having an hundred "sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave "the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and 66 go after that which is lost, until he find it? "and when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he "cometh home, he calleth together his friends "and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice "with me; for I have found my sheep which "was lost. I say unto you, That likewise joy "shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just "persons, which need no repentance.
