2.11.1

Open issues pertaining to the SRB Refurbishment and Storage Facility Station Set (V31) are listed below. Resolution of these issues is planned during the integration contract.

a. Aft skirt insulation application process definition. Station Set V32, SRB Retrieval and Disassembly Facility

Current Baseline

The Solid Rocket Booster Disassembly Facility (SDAF) encompasses all
the equipment, facilities, and services provided for the ocean re-
trieval, disassembly, washing, drying, preservation, and shipping of
the SRBS after launch of a Space Shuttle Vehicle (SSV). Operations
begin with the ocean retrieval of the SRBS after the launch of an SSV
and continue through safing, insulation removal, wash, disassembly,
preservation, and shipping. SRB components are shipped to Station Set
V31 at VAFB, parachutes and parachute hardware to Station Set V30 at
VAFB, and the large Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) segment casings to the
vendor, Thiokol, in Utah. Station Set V32 is located on the U. S.
Navy facility at Port Hueneme, California, about 100 miles south of
VAFB. All facilities required for Station Set V32 are new facilities
constructed specifically for the STS program since there are no
existing buildings available at Port Hueneme which could be adapted
to STS use.

The External Tank Processing and Storage Station Set encompasses the
mechanical, electrical, fluid, and supporting major components nec-
essary to receive, process, and store the External Tank (ET) at SVAFB.
The ET Processing and Storage Station Set provides for off-load of the
ET from a NASA barge at the SVAFB Docking Facility and transport the
ET to the Tank Checkout Facility (TCF). The ET will be processed and
stored in the TCF until scheduled to be delivered to the Launch Pad
for SSV integration and checkout. Two basic facilities will be con-
structed to support the V33 operations. These two facilities are
SVAFB docking facility in the boathouse area of Point Arguello and a
checkout facility located approximately half way between the docking
facility and the launch pad.
