OTHER COUNTRIES FURNISHING ASSISTANCE TO YUGOSLAVIA

Mr. RABAUT. Speaking about this credit, what other countries, if any, are furnishing any assistance to Yugoslavia?

Mr. PERKINS. Creditwise, not dollarwise, the English and the Germans are, and the French are talking about it, and so are the Belgians and some of the other countries.

Mr. RABAUT. Has anybody done anything?

Mr. PERKINS. Yes, they have given them credit. Germany has established the equivalent of a $35,000,000 credit.

Mr. RABAUT. $35,000,000?

Mr. PERKINS. Yes, and there is a total 16,000,000-pound credit from the United Kingdom.

Mr. RABAUT. Who is this credit from?

Mr. PERKINS. From the United Kingdom.

Mr. TRUESDELL. That is not credit for food assistance, but total credit.

Mr. RABAUT. Total credit?

Mr. PERKINS. Yes, sir.

POPULATION

Mr. RABAUT. How about the population of Yugoslavia, say, in 1917?

Mr. PERKINS. It is about 16,000,000, I think. It is little bit more or less than 16,000,000. It is 16,400,000.

Mr. RABAUT. It was 15,751,953 in March of 1948.

Mr. PERKINS. It is now estimated at 16,400,000.

FOOD PRODUCTION

Mr. RABAUT. Now, what was the total production of foodstuffs as of the nearest date to this? Do you have those figures?

Mr. PERKINS. Yes; we have those figures here, too.

Mr. TABER. Do you have these things in shape so that you could pass them around? Do you have copies of them available? Mr. PERKINS. Yes.

Mr. RABAUT. This table is headed "Gross production of basic food commodities in Yugoslavia for specified years." Without objection we will put this table on gross production of basic food commodities in the record at this point, and this table on Yugoslav population for specified years.

(The matter referred to is as follows:)

Mr. PERKINS. I was just going to point out what these figures indicated.

Mr. RABAUT. All right; go ahead.

Mr. PERKINS. They simply show that of the principal grains, the average from 1933 to 1937 was less than they were producing after the war.

Mr. RABAUT. Yes.

Mr. PERKINS. And, of course, 1950 shows a substantial drop in those figures.

Mr. RABAUT. Yes; and that drop was due to what?

Mr. PERKINS. Drought.

POPULATION TREND

Mr. RABAUT. Is the population about the same as it was?

Mr. PERKINS. If you look at the bottom there it shows 16,400,000 as the present estimate.

Mr. RABAUT. So, it is practically holding its own, or increasing a little bit?

Mr. PERKINS. It has gone up a little bit. It went down during the war and it has come back up since.

Mr. RABAUT. During a war the population can change a lot.
Mr. PERKINS. Yes.

Mr. RABAUT. Now, as to the crops referred to and the grains referred to, evidently there are two types of crops that they are deficient in, and I noticed your reference to the commodities in which they are deficient, in some of which we cannot meet their full requests. I think you said something about cutting the lard request; did you not?

Mr. PERKINS. We cut back the request on two or three items a little bit because we were not certain that they were absolutely necessary to them in this situation. It was not a question of whether we could meet it or not, but we were not at all certain that their request was justified for the full amounts.

EXPORT OF FOOD PRODUCTS

Mr. RABAUT. Have you any tables here showing what their food exports were in 1947?

Mr. PERKINS. Yes; I think we have.

Mr. TRUESDELL. This table shows both the exports and imports. Mr. RABAUT. Without objection, I think we had better put this table in the record at this point.
