McClellan, late a Senator from the State of Arkansas. 20-301 O-78-2 COMPENSATION AND MILEAGE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT AND SENATORS The estimate for this appropriation includes funds for the salaries of the Vice President and Senators, agency contributions for retirement, life and health insurance, and the statutory mileage allowance for the President of the Senate and Senators for traveling to and returning from each regular session of the Congress. The mileage allowance for Senators is authorized by the Act of July 28, 1866 (2 U.S.C. 43) payable "***at the rate of 20 cents per mile, to be estimated by the nearest route usually traveled in going to and returning from each regular session." The mileage allowance for the President of the Senate is authorized by the Act of July 8, 1935 (2 U.S.C. 43a) and is payable "***at the same rate and in the same manner as now allowed by law to Senators,***." Total Compensation and Contributions.. MILEAGE (241,822 miles x 20¢ per mile + reserve of $10,005.52) Estimate. $6,421,438.68 58,369.92 $6,479,808.60 EXPENSE ALLOWANCES OF THE VICE PRESIDENT, MAJORITY AND MINORITY The estimate for this appropriation includes funds for the expense allowances of the Vice President, the Majority and Minority Leaders, and the Majority and Minority Whips. The expense allowance for the Vice President was first appropriated for by Public Law 81-71 effective January 20, 1949. The expense allowance of the Majority and Minority Leaders was first appropriated for by Public Law 84-242 effective July 1, 1955. The expense allowance of the Majority and Minority Whips was first appropriated for by the Supplemental Appropriations Act, 1977 (Public Law 95-26), effective April 1, 1977. SALARIES AND EXPENSES The estimate for this appropriation includes funds for salaries only for fourteen (14) functions of the Senate and agency contributions and longevity compensation as authorized by law.
