During his later years John Hamilton Reynolds described himself as one who had 'walled through life with a skeleton of reputation without a particle of name. For a man who had once cherished the idea of fame as much as his intimate friend Keats, that loss was a bitter disappointment. He would have been pleased if he could have anticipated that after the lapse of a century scholar would be moderately successful in tracking his life and works.
