Dr. TRIVELPIECE. As you recall, I showed you a diagram at the beginning of my discussions last week in which I talked about molecules and how molecules are broken up into atoms. That was just a pictorial illustration.

But in fact it is possible now to see atoms directly with this facility. What you see here is a piece of molybdenum, and that is the atomic size that you are looking at and those are the individual atoms of molybdenum.

Dr. TRIVELPIECE. I think you can clearly see that this is a remarkable achievement to be able to see individual atoms. Furthermore, the implication is that by being able to obtain resolution at this level you can then put different materials in there and understand how it influences the relationship between the various atoms. You can then determine where additional atoms, if they were implanted, would tend to go.

THE YIELD STRENGTH OF Ni3AI INCREASES WITH TEMPERATURE AND REACHES A MAXIMUM AROUND 830 K

BECAUSE OF THE INCREASE IN YIELD STRENGTH
WITH TEMPERATURE, NIŽAI IS MUCH STRONGER
THAN TYPE 316 STAINLESS STEEL AT ELEVATED
TEMPERATURES.
