EXPLANATIONS

[blocks in formation]

Entries of Books.

Each book is entered (1) under the name of its author or compiler, where the fullest description is given; (2) under the first word or principal word of its title, unless the title is identical with a subject heading, or similar to it, as "Text-book of Botany;" (3) under its subject heading, with the exception of fiction, legal codes, court reports, and new editions of standard poetry. When there are several edi tions of a book, the place of title and subject entries is supplied by references to the author. Imprint entry is made preferably under the author's real name, but under the last initial or pseudonym, when the real name is not known or rarely used; under names of editors of compilations; under names of countries states or cities which are treated as authors of their publications and of law reports; under names of societies or conventions, as authors of their transactions, journals, reports, and collections; under names of churches as authors of liturgies, hymn-books, catechisms, etc.; under Bible, when the book is a text or paraphrase of canonical or apocryphal writings; under the first word, not an article, of anonymous works. Translated works, abridgments, and indexes, are put under the original work.

Form of author's name used as heading. For English compound names, the second part; for foreign names, the first part; for French and English names beginning with a prefix, except the French prefixes d' and de, the prefix; in all other languages, the name following the prefix; for names of English noblemen, the title; for names of bishops, the family name; for names of members of royal families, canonized persons, and members of religious orders, the first name; for names of societies, the first word, not an article, of its corporate name.

Only the most important government publications are catalogued. The Superintendent of Documents issues from time to time, for free distribution, a price list of the publications for sale at his office. In indexing government publications, the governmental body issuing them is treated as the author, and the department to which application should be made, is given in the place of the publisher's name.

Binding is in cloth unless otherwise stated. Specimen Entries.
