Today the subcommittee begins hearings on the Department of Defense appropriation bill for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1964. This subcommittee will have under consideration requests for new obligational authority totaling $49,014,237,000. This does not indude other requests of the Department of Defense for the following Those items will be considered by other subcommittees. The total mount requested for all of those activities that are connected with the defense of our country and the maintenance of peace on this sphere omes to about $52,800 million. It is a very staggering sum of money when considered in some aspects. When we look to the things that expenditure is supposed to protect, it is not excessive. 1 |
