STANFORD LIBRARIE

DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION Reinforced concrete footings and floor slab, masonry walls, structural steel frame and roof system with gravel built-up roof. Utilities and necessary support. Includes fire-fighting vehicle stalls, technical services, fire extinguisher maintenance, general purpose/squadrooms, sleeping quarters, kitchen, communications, administration, mechanical and storage areas.

Air Conditioning - 10 Tons 11. REQUIREMENT: 9,700 SF ADEQUATE: 2,650 SF SUBSTANDARD: 6,100 SF PROJECT: Construct a new base fire station to replace substandard facilities. REQUIREMENT: A properly configured and equipped facility is required to accommodate structural firefighting crews and equipment. CURRENT SITUATION: The main base fire station consists of four aging, structurally deteriorating wood frame buildings constructed in the 1940's. The severe winter climate and continuous use have essentially "worn out" these buildings and they are extremely costly to operate and maintain. In addition to being energy-inefficient, offices, training areas and the bunk room are small, poorly lit, inadequately heated and crowded. There is insufficient space for training, storage of protective clothing and rescue equipment, fire extinguisher maintenance, and hose drying/storage. Firefighter emergency response is impeded by low ceilings and poor lighting and by outward swinging vehicle bay doors which, during periods of icing and heavy snowfall, are difficult to open. Concrete floors are breaking up. Overall firefighter efficiency and morale is adversely affected by these substandard facilities. IMPACT IF NOT PROVIDED: Substandard facilities will continue to be used unnecessarily placing personnel and property at risk.
