10 DESCAIPTION OF PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
Removal of light load overruns; medium load portland cement concrete center
sections and turnarounds with compacted base; asphaltic concrete shoulders
in adjacent sections with compacted base; runway stripings; runway and
traffic control lighting; utilities and necessary support.
11. REQUIREMENT: 33,300 SY ADEQUATE: 0 SUBSTANDARD: 33,300 SY
PROJECT: Construct new overruns to permit take-off of airlift aircraft
with increased loads.
REQUIREMENT: A major mission for Pope AFB is the airlift support of the
Army mission at nearby Fort Bragg. Adequate operational facilities are
required to load and launch C-5, C-141 and Civilian Reserve Aircraft
with maximum cargo and fuel loadings.
CURRENT SITUATION: The present runway length of 7,500 feet is inadequate
to accommodate take-off of fully loaded aircraft. This condition effec-
tively extends the time to airlift the 82nd Airborne Division in con-
tingency situations. Reconstruction of the two 1,000 foot overruns will
provide an additional 2,000 feet to the runway for take-off, permitting a
substantial increase in the cargo and fuel loads.
IMPACT IF NOT PROVIDED: Cargo and troop movements projected for the 82nd
Airborne Division will be hampered.

10. DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION Reinforced concrete footings and floor slab, structural steel frame, masonry walls, steel joists with gravel built-up roof, special air conditioning for environmental control, raised computer flooring, fire protection systems, utilities and necessary support. Includes computer and remote terminal rooms, tape library, supply, storage, maintenance and administrative areas.

SUBSTANDARD: 3,800 SF PROJECT: Construction of a new data processing facility. REQUIREMENT: A properly sized and configured facility is required to house the new Phase IV computer. The Phase IV computer acquisition program affects every USAF installation and represents a $50 million annual savings Air Force wide by replacing obsolete Burroughs 3500/3700/4700 and Univac 1050-II computers. It is necessary to support essential weapon system maintenance and supply activities, and permit more effective management of personnel, financial, engineering, and equipment resources at base level. This computer system is scheduled for delivery in August 1984. CURRENT SITUATION: The two existing computers to be replaced by the Phase IV computer are located in one facility. The current physical limitation of this facility will not permit installation of the new Phase IV computer. There is no other facility available that meets the required space criteria. Construction of a new facility is necessary to adequately accommodate the new computer equipment and associated support functions. IMPACT IF NOT PROVIDED: We will have no place to house the expensive computer now on order.
