10 DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A new pre-engineered metal building complete, special fire suppression
system, utilities and necessary support built on an existing reinforced
foundation with floor slab. Includes corrosion control treatment, admin-
istrative and mechanical space.

SUBSTANDARD: 0
PROJECT: Construction of a new covered corrosion control facility on an
existing aircraft washrack pad to allow indoor cleaning and preventive
maintenance of aircraft.
REQUIREMENT: Corrosion control is an essential part of the Air Force
aircraft maintenance program. 'It provides for early detection and correc-
tion of corrosion problems before they can assume major proportions. A
properly configured facility is required to enable all-weather, year round
and daily accomplishment of this vital function on assigned C-130 and
KC-135 aircraft. The facility must be well ventilated to assure the
safety and health personnel engaged in this hazardous work which
involves the use of toxic inflammable chemicals and paints.
CURRENT SITUATION: There are no corrosion control facilities on base.
This important function is being performed on an open wash rack and/or
parking ramp. The uncontrolled environment results in adverse effects.
The wind blows chemicals to undesired areas of the aircraft and dries them
þefore they can be completely rinsed off. Foreign particles (dust,
grease, oil, etc.) increases air flow drag, promotes corrosion, changes
palance and slows dissipation of heat from engines.
IMPACT IF NOT PROVIDED: This function will continue on the open ramp sub-
pect to adverse impact by weather conditions.

10 DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
Reinforced concrete footings and floor slab, ma sonry walls, structural
steel frame and roof system with gravel built-up roof and solar-heated
domestic hot water and heat. Utilities and necessary support. Includes
gymnasium, handball courts, exercise and locker rooms, latrines, admin-
istrative, mechanical and storage space.

REQUIREMENT: 50,250 ADEQUATE: 20,400 SF SUBSTANDARD: 0 PROJECT: Construction of a new base gymnasium. REQUIREMENT : Adequate gymnasium facilities for both male and female personnel assigned to McChord AFB. Two existing gymnasiums were constructed in 1942 and 1943. Metal exterior siding installed in 1963 has been the only alteration. Any addition to the present structures is impractical because of cost, age, and internal configuration. Base military population, which now exceeds 5,000 personnel is the overriding factor supporting the need for an additional gymnasium. CURRENT SITUATION: The size and configuration of the existing two gyms severely limit their capability to support a diversified physical conditioning and sports program. Judo, wrestling and boxing cannot be conducted due to limitations of space. Athletic activities available to female military personnel are greatly restricted because limited latrine/locker room facilities prevent concurrent use. Demand for the two unofficial sized handball/racquet courts is so great that reservations must be made three days in advance. IMPACT IF NOT PROVIDED: Overcrowded shower/locker rooms, curtailment of competitive sports programs, lack of separate women's shower/dressing rooms will continue as significant deficiencies.
