10 DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION All electrical, structural, and mechanical work required to provide an effective, functional computer facility. Includes computer operations, maintenance, storage and administrative areas. 11. REQUIREMENT: 48,600 SF ADEQUATE: 24,000 SF SUBSTANDARD: 17,000 SF PROJECT: Alteration to adequately accommodate computer systems. REQUIREMENT: Adequate space for three major and three smaller computer systems. These computers play a critical role in scientific and technical intelligence production and are used in assessments as well as essential support to the Foreign Technology Division's (FTD) key analytical missions. New intelligence data and processing techniques require computers which will produce information for threat estimates, collection performance evaluation, and intelligence data management as required by USAF, DIA and national authorities. CURRENT SITUATION: The current computers are located in four separate areas, none of which can be enlarged or rehabilitated to accommodate the upgraded computers. Fire protection and environmental control systems are inadequate. Additionally, the existing computers cannot be shut down while the new system is being installed. IMPACT IF NOT PROVIDED: The continued use of the existing systems will result in severe degradation of essential computer services which would seriously affect FTD's ability to support U.S. intelligence production and National Defense planning.
