I

PREFACE.

T is hoped that these Readings may be found generally useful before Family

Prayers or for Private Meditation.

When used for families the Versicles and Psalms may be chanted and the Hymn sung. But generally the Hymn would be omitted, and the Versicles and Psalms said alternately, the Master reading the ANTIPHON and the VOICE OF THE BELOVED, and beginning the first verse of the Psalm. The Voice of the Beloved has been made the key-note of the teaching of each day. The Lessons may be used alternately for following weeks.

It has been found in practice that both for family reading and for private meditation the attention is kept alive, and the

particular lesson more forcibly applied, by the combined teaching of Versicle and Antiphon and Psalm and Lessons, than by a long chapter touching upon various subjects.

These Readings could be used with any form of family prayer morning or evening, but a special form is added at the end of the book for any who may wish to have all under one cover.

READINGS FOR THE SEASONS.

Advent.

All standing.

V. O God, make speed to save us.
R. O Lord, make haste to help us.

V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

:

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

HYMN.

HARK! a thrilling voice is sounding;

"Christ is nigh!" it seems to say,

"Cast away the dreams of darkness,
O ye children of the day!"
