The subcommittee met, pursuant to call, at 9:55 a.m., in room 1324, Longworth House Office Building, Hon. Ed Edmondson (chairman of the subcommittee) presiding. Mr. EDMONDSON. The Subcommittee on Mines and Mining will come to order this morning. This is the first hearing of the session before the subcommittee and we are pleased to have with us this morning, for general presentation, on behalf of the Department of the Interior, the able and knowledgeable Hollis M. Dole, Assistant Secretary, Mineral Resources. I want to welcome you and the members of your staff and we appreciate your having the heads of your office here this morning and appreciate this briefing. Mr. ASPINALL. It is a pleasure to have Mr, Dole here with his group this morning on matters relative to the mining operation and Government procedures. Mr. MCCLURE. I just wanted to underscore what has been said. I think the presence of the Secretary with his staff this morning is a mark of the importance of the mining industry to the economy of the United States and I think that as the testimony develops today, you will be getting into some of the areas of conflict with which this industry is faced but of fundamental importance to our country. I am happy that we are able to have a man as knowledgeable as you are. Mr. KEE. Mr. Dole is certainly a most knowledgeable and outstanding public official. Mr. BARING. I just want to go along with the chairman and the members of the full committee. I welcome Mr. Dole and his staff. I have mining in my blood and I like to hear things about mining. Mr. Dole. Thank you for your kind remarks. As you have noted, I have brought with me today the heads of the various departments and some of my assistants. Unfortunately, my Deputy for Energy was unable to be here because of conflicting testimony we have to give on the other side in regard to the development of energy policy. (1) |
