As we have previously discussed, I do believe that we are now in a position to discuss a possible compromise.of this case with you, having obtained most of the necessary information to estimate and prove the probable future special damages of Mr. as well as those incurred to date.

Dr.

From my discussions with Mr.

; from the deposition of which we took today; and from my discussions with Dr. Chief of Staff of the Spinal Cord Injury Section of the Veterans Administration Hospital in I believe it is reasonable to assume that Mr. will require at least the sum of $60,000.00 per year in medical and nursing expenses to maintain him for the balance of his life.

That figure assumes one orderly on a 24 hour basis, which totals $86.64 per day. It also includes the services of a Licensed Pratical Nurse for an eight hour shift at a cost of $40.80 per day. Finally, it includes one physical therapy visit per day at $23.00 per day. This totals $150.44 per day. For a 365 day year this means approximately $55,000.00.

Adding to this the medical supplies and other medical care which he will require during the year will increase the total to at least $60,000.00 per year.

Senate Veterans Affairs Committee
Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C.

Dear Senator Talmadge:

I am very disappointed that I will be unable to
appear before your Committee, as I have long
looked forward to meeting you. Unfortunately,
I will be out of town until the 15th of May and
I am therefore utilizing this means of expressing
the views of the Military Wives Association on
the subject of S-1597 "Veterans Disability
Compensation, and Survivor Benefits Act of 1975.

Our Association's aim is to "help the military
family". We receive many letters in our office
from widows about the small amount of money they
have to live on during a period when we are
experiencing both recession and inflation that is
rapidly increasing every day. We believe at
least a 14% increase would help to provide the
necessities for many of our widows whose husbands
passed away before the parity pay hikes of recent
years.

We therefore hope this subcommittee will pass
Senator Hartke's bill in its entirety.

I request this letter be made a part of the record of your subcommittee hearings.

Sincerely. Gallaher
Bare
