FURNITURE AND FURNISHINGS

General Statement

This appropriation provides funding for the purchase of furniture, furnishings, and equipment for most Library programs.

The total increase requested is $5,416,600. Of this sum, $3,950,000 is to satisfy furniture and equipment costs related to the renovation/restoration of the Thomas Jefferson and John Adams Library Buildings. The remaining amount includes provision for (1) $75,000 for low metal partitions in the James Madison Memorial Building, (2) $33,405 to purchase twenty typewriters as part of the Library's continuing typewriter replacement program and twenty-five typewriters for new staff members, (3) $429,800 to provide workstations, automated support furniture, and other furniture requirements for existing and new staff, (4) $876,395 for non-recurring requirements, and (5) $52,000 for Overseas Offices furniture and equipment.

Partitions

This sum is requested to purchase needed moveable low metal partitions which can be fitted with electrical wiring, data cabling and power receptacles and a variety of work surfaces and task lighting fixtures. This amount will buy approximately 225 partitions and associated electrical powerways and connectors.

b. Typewriters

The entire sum is requested to purchase twenty (20) electric typewriters to replace older, unserviceable machines as part of the Library's continuing program to maintain adequate typing equipment.

Annual furniture

Sixty-four percent of the total request ($110,000) is to provide workstation furniture. Included are adjustable VDT workstations in the Copyright Cataloging Division to fit individual users, alleviating operator fatigue and increasing productivity. An additional $50,000 is requested to provide furniture to Library-wide offices which were not provided adequate furnishings upon relocation to the Madison Building. The remaining sum is needed to accommodate the 10 percent increase in the cost of providing replacement furniture and furnishings for those worn from heavy and continual use.

Of the total, 58 percent ($150,000) is necessary for the purchase of 285 pieces of An additional automation support furniture to accommodate ADP on-line equipment. $107,800 is needed to provide furniture and furnishings for 49 additional positions. b. Typewriters

Microfilm equipment

Of the total sum requested, $74,300 is needed to procure twenty-seven microfilm/fiche readers in Research Services to replace old equipment which suffer frequent breakdowns Additionally, fourteen microfiche cabinets and pose difficulties in patron operation. ($14,130) are needed for annual accumulation of microfiche in various divisions of Processing Services is in need of 30 micromax readers ($58,650) for users of the official catalog and the public catalog when these catalogs are converted Research Services. Fifteen readers ($4,350) in the Subject Cataloging Division will replace the use of printed manuals with the use of the up-to-date microform editions. The to microform. Congressional Research Service requests a microfiche reader-printer ($12,315) to replace older equipment with current technology in the Congressional Reference Division where

microfiche is utilized extensively by CRS and Congressional staff, and four cabinets ($5,060) to house additional fiche materials. The remaining sum ($4,985) is to replace a microfiche reader-printer in the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped and in the Subject Cataloging Division to replace heavily used equipment which are more than six years old.

Book, basket and map trucks

This sum will provide 92 book trucks throughout the Library. Forty-one of these trucks are to replace unserviceable equipment in Processing Services. Twenty-three trucks are to replace heavily used equipment and to provide Copyright examiners with sufficient space for materials in process. Research Services is in need of twenty book trucks to move picture collections to and from the Prints and Photographs Reading Room; for Collections Management to serve the expanded stack areas; and for M/B/RS to move materials from storage locations to scholars in the reading rooms. The remaining 8 trucks are to allow for the replacement of unsafe trucks which are currently being used by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Filing equipment

+ $ 25,805

Forty-eight percent of the total request ($12,275) is needed to provide adequate storage and replace cabinets with malfunctioning track mechanisms which present a safety hazard to Congressional Research staff. An additional $5,550 is necessary for 3 cabinets to secure incoming documents and checks in the Licensing Division. The remaining $7,980 is needed for the purchase of 22 cabinets throughout the Library to house records for which there is presently inadequate storage.
