20 When the even, &c.] And in the even ing he cometh with the twelve; and as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, one of you which eateth with me shall' betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them 23 to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe

reproached me (said David): then I could have borne it; neither was it he that hated me, that did magnify himself against me: then I would have hid myself from him ; but it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. Ps. lv. 12, 13. Have not I chosen you twelve? and one of you is a devil. He spake of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve. John vi. 70, 71. And he answered, and said unto them, It is one of the twelve that dippeth with me in the dish. Mar. xiv. 19, 20. And they began to inquire among themselves which of them it was that should do this thing. Lu. xxii. 23. Then the disciples looked one to another, doubting of whom he spake. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter, therefore, beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be, of whom he spake. He, then, lying on Jesus' breast, saith unto him, Lord, who is it? John xiii. 22-25. He (Jesus) saith unto him, the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? John xxi. 17.

Behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. Lu. xxii. 21. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, he that eateth bread with me, hath lifted up his heel against me. He it is (that should betray Jesus) to whom I shall give a sop when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon; and after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest,

do quickly: now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. Joha xiii. 18. 26, 27, 28.

24 Son of man goeth.] See verses 54. 56. I will put enmity between “thee" ("the ser pent") and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Ge. iii. 15. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me! why art thou so far from helping me? O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. I am a worm, and no man: a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the Lord: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws: and thou hast brought me inte the dust of death. The assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. Be not thou far from me, O Lord; O my strength, haste thee to help me. liver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. A seed shall serve him: they shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born that he hath done this. Ps. xxii. throughout. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. I sink in deep mire: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God. They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty. Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. They gave me also gall
