disciple is not above his master; but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. Lu. vi. 40. Not as though I had already attained (said Paul), either were already perfect; but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus: brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended. But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us, therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Phi. iii. 12—15. Go and sell that thou hast.] See chap. vi. 19, 20. and verse 20. Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. Lu. xii. 33. Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 33. Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness, that when ye fail they may receive you into everlasting habitations. Lu. xvi. 9. All that believed were together, and had all things common, and sold their possessions, and goods, and parted them to all men as every man had need. Ac. ii. 44, 45. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart, and of one soul, neither said any of them, that ought of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had all things common. Neither was there any among them that lacked; for as many as were possessors of lands, or houses, sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, and laid them down at the apostles' feet, and distribution was made unto every man, according as he had need. Ac. iv. 32-35. Charge them that are rich in this world that they be not high minded, nor trust in uncertain riches; but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate, laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. 1 Ti. vi. 17, 18, 19. Ye had compassion on me in my bonds (said Paul), and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that you have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. He. x. 34.

Come and follow me.] See verse 28. and chap. iv. 19. Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Mar. viii. 34. Sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou

shalt have treasure in heaven, and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Mar. x. 21. And after these things (curing the sick of the palsy, &c.) he went forth, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. Lu. v. 27, 28. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Lu. ix. 23. Sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. Lu. xviii. 22. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow John x. 27. If any man serve me, let him follow me, and where I am there shall also my servant be. John xii. 26. 22 He went away sorrowful.] See chap. xiii. 22; xiv. 9. And they (the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house) cried unto the children of Dan (who had robbed Micah of his priest, and consecrated things), and they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company? And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away, and what have I more? And what is this that ye say unto me? What aileth thee? Ju. xviii. 23, 24. Then the king (Darius), when he heard these words (of Daniel's breach of the ensnaring decree), was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him. And he laboured to the going down of the sun tỏ deliver him. Then these men (the presidents and princes) assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, that no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed. Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest conti nually, he will deliver thee. And a stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords, that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel. Da. vi. 14-17. The king (Herod) was exceeding sorry (when he was asked for the head of John the Baptist), yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject "her" ("the daughter of Herodias"). Mar. vi. 26. And he (the young man) was sad at this saying, and went away grieved; for he had great possessions. Mar.

art not Cæsar's friend; whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour. And he saith unto the Jews, Behold, your king! but they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away. John xix. 12—16.

For he had great possessions.] See chap. vi. 24; xvi. 26. Arise, O Lord, deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword, from men which are thy hand; O Lord, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure. They are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. Ps. xvii. 13, 14. They (the Jews) come unto thee, as the people cometh; and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ez. xxxiii. 31. This ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Ep. v. 5. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence and covetousness, which is idolatry, for which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience. Co. iii. 5.

23 That a rich man, &c.] See chap. xiii. 22. It shall be when the Lord thy God shall have brought "thee" ("Israel") into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities which thou buildedst not, and houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, when thou shalt have eaten, and be full, then beware lest thou forget the Lord which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. De. vi. 10, 11, 12. When thou hast eaten, and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day; lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein, and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is mul

tiplied, then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; and thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth; but thou shalt remember the Lord thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. De. viii. 10-18. If I have made gold my hope, or have said to fine gold, Thou art my confidence; if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and be. cause my hand had gotten much, this also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge. Job xxxi. 24. 28. They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches, none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him. Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; for when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him. Though while he lived he blessed his soul, (and men will praise thee when thou doest well to thyself,) he (his soul) shall go to the generation of his fathers. Ps. xlix. 6, 7. 16-19. He that trusteth in his riches shall fall. Pr. xi. 28. Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me, lest I be full and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. Pr. xxx. 8, 9 How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God. Mar. x. 23. Take heed and beware of covetousness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits, and my goods: and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Lu. xii. 15-21. No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things; and they derided him. There was a certain

enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, 24 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. When his disciples 25 heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men 26

rich man (said Jesus in a parable) which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table; moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom; and he cried, and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things, but now he is comforted and thou art tor■mented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed; so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot, neither can they pass to us that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee, therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house, for I have five brethren, that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Lu. xvi. 13, 14. 19-28. When Jesus saw # that he (the young man) was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have #riches enter into the kingdom of God. Lu. xviii. 24. Ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 1 Co. i. 26. They that will be rich fall into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil; which while » some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Ti. vi. 9, 10. Let the brother of low degree rejoice, in that he is exalted; but the rich in that he is made low; because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth. Ja. i. 9, 10, 11. Hath not God chosen the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and

draw you before the judgment seats? Ja. ii. 5. Go to, now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you; your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth eaten; your gold and silver is cankered, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire; ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers which have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth, and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. Ja. v. 1-4.

Enter into the kingdom of heaven.] See chap. v. 20; xviii. 3. The publicans and the harlots (said Jesus) go into the kingdom of God before "you" ("the chief priests," &c.) Mat. xxi. 31. Except a man be born again (said Jesus), he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John iii. 3, 4, 5. We must, through much tribulation, enter into the kingdom of God. Ac. xiv. 22.

24 It is easier for a camel.] See verse 26. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. Mat. xxiii. 24. Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil. Je. xiii. 23. Children, how hard is it (said Jesus to his disciples) for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Mar. x. 24, 25. It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Lu. xviii. 25. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? John v. 44.

25 Who then can be saved?] Except those days (of the coming of the Son of man) should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. Mat. xxiv. 22. Except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved; but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. Mar. xiii. 20. Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to

27 this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Then answered Peter, and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, 28 and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in

enter in at the strait gate; for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. Lu. xiii. 23, 24. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Ro. x. 13. At this present time also (as well as in former times) there is a remnant, according to the election of grace. And if by grace, then is it no more of works; otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace; otherwise work is no more work. What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded. Ro. xi. 5, 6, 7.

26 But with God all things are possible.] Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee (Abraham), according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Ge. xviii. 14. And the Lord said unto Moses (when his faith was staggered), Is the Lord's hand waxed short? Thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not. Nu. xi. 23. I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee. Job xlii. 2. Salvation belongeth unto the Lord thy blessing is upon thy people. Ps. iii. 8. God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this, that power belongeth unto God. Ps. lxii. 11. Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is there any thing too hard for me? Je. xxxii. 27. Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people, in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the Lord of hosts. Zec. viii. 6. With men it is impossible (to save themselves), but not with God; for with God all things are possible. Mar. x. 27. With God nothing shall be impossible. Lu. i. 37. The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. Lu. xviii. 27.

27 We have forsaken all, and followed thee.] See chap. iv. 20, 21, 22; ix. 9. Of Levi he (Moses) said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah: who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children; for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant, De. xxxiii. 8, 9. Come ye after me (said Jesus to Simon and Andrew), and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets and followed him. And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw Janres the son of Zebedee, and John

his brother, who also were in the ship, mending their nets. And straightway he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him. Mar. i. 17-20. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus, sitting at the receipt of custom; and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. Mar. ii. 14. Lo, we have left all and followed thee (said Peter). Mar. x. 28. See Lu. xviii. 20. When they (James and John) had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. He (Jesus) went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom; and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. Lu. v. 11. 27, 28. Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that be hath, he cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 33, Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung that I may win Christ. Phi. iii. 8.

What shall we have?] When the first came (of the labourers that were hired at different hours), they supposed that they should have received more (than the others); and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, saying, these last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. Mat. xx. 10, 11, 12. These many years do I serve thee (said the elder brother of the prodigal in the parable to his father), neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment, and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. L. IV. 29. God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen; yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are; that no flesh should glory in his presence. 1 Co. i. 27, 28, 29. For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? Now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? 1 Co. iv. 7.

28 In the regeneration.] Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former shall not be remembered nor come into mind. Is. lxv. 17. For as the new heavens and the

the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath 29

new earth which I will make shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed (the seed of the faithful) and your name remain. Is. lxvi. 22. And he shall send Jesus Christ (said Peter to the Jews) which before I was preached unto you; whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. Ac. iii. 20, 21. We, according to his promise, look for new heavens and new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 2 Pe. iii. 13. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. Re. xxi. 5.

When the Son of man shall sit.] See chap. xvi. 27. To you who are troubled (God will recompense) rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ; who shall be punished with everlasting destruction, from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power, when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. 2 Th. i. 7-10. I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them; and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Re. xx. 11-15. See chap. xxv. 31. Ye also shall sit, &c.] Grant (said the mother of Zebedee's children) that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. Mat. xx. 21. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations; and I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me, that ye may eat and drink at my table, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Lu. xxii. 28, 29, 30. Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life. 1 Co. vi. 2, 3. If we suffer we shall also reign with him. 2 Ti. ii. 12. He that overcometh and keepeth my works

unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers, even as I received of my Father. Re. ii. 26, 27. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Re. iii. 21.

The twelve tribes of Israel.] And they (the Israelites) came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees; and they encamped there by the waters. Ex. xv. 27. And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. Ex. xxiv. 4. And the stones (of the breastplate of judgment) shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes. Ex. xxviii. 21. And thou shalt take (said Moses, for the shewbread) fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof; two tenth deals shall be in one cake. Le. xxiv. 5. Now therefore (as the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over Jordan, said Joshua), take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man; and it shall come to pass as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests, that bear the ark of the Lord, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above, and they shall stand upon an heap. Jos. iii. 12, 13. And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the Lord came, saying, Israel shall be thy name; and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. 1 Ki. xviii. 31, 32. And (the children of Israel) offered at the dedication of this house of God, an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve he goats, according to the numbers of the tribes of Israel. Ez. vi. 17. And I heard the number of them which were sealed (in their foreheads): and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Re. vii. 4. And there appeared a great wonder in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. Re. xii. 1. And (the holy Jerusalem) had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel; on
